Cotton remains one of the most strategic agricultural commodities globally, not only for its vital role in the textile industry but also for its contribution to rural employment and national economies. According to recent global statistics, annual cotton production has reached approximately 25 million metric tons, with China, India, the U.S., Pakistan, and Brazil leading the ranks.
In the 2023–2024 agricultural year, China leads the world in cotton production, contributing around 6 million tons annually. India and the United States follow closely, maintaining their long-standing positions as dominant players in both production and trade. This level of output fuels not only domestic industries but also bolsters their roles as major cotton exporters.
Cotton Consumption and Iran’s Market Gap
While China is the largest producer, it is also the top importer of cotton, reflecting the scale of its textile industry. According to Statista 2025, the leading cotton-importing countries in 2023/2024 were China, Bangladesh, and Vietnam—together accounting for more than 60% of global imports.
China, Bangladesh, and Vietnam lead global cotton imports according to 2023/2024 data.
Meanwhile, Iran’s cotton production remains modest. In 2023, Iran cultivated about 92,000 hectares of cotton, producing around 75,000 tons of fiber—only half of its domestic demand. This gap forces reliance on imports to support the national textile industry.
Global Leaders in Cotton Trade
The global export value of cotton reached $51.8 billion in 2023. Despite the decline from previous years, countries like China, the U.S., and India continue to dominate exports. Asian countries alone account for 57% of global cotton exports, followed by North America and Latin America.
Iran’s Strategic Potential
Although Iran is not a top global player, cotton remains vital to rural employment and industrial diversification. With more investment in irrigation, modern farming, and ginning technology, Iran could improve its standing and reduce dependency on imports.
Looking Ahead
As the global cotton market evolves, key issues like climate change, trade policy, and supply chain traceability are shaping the future. For Iran, adapting to these trends while focusing on domestic production could lead to stronger regional influence and sustainable growth.
Iran’s cotton sector remains modest, but fields like these hint at growth potential through modernization and support.
