Cotton made in Africa Receives Top “Excellent” Rating from Germany’s Siegelklarheit Platform

Cotton made in Africa has received the highest possible rating of “Excellent” from Siegelklarheit, Germany’s sustainability label assessment platform, recognizing the cotton standard for its strong performance in environmental protection, social responsibility and credibility. The evaluation places CmiA among the leading sustainability standards for cotton and textile products available on the market.

Comprehensive Review of Sustainability Labels

The latest assessment was conducted as part of a major update to the Siegelklarheit evaluation system, which has been helping consumers assess sustainability labels since 2015.

Operated by Verbraucherzentrale NRW, the platform expanded its rating system from two to five levels to provide consumers with clearer and more detailed comparisons of sustainability certifications. The initiative is supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and the German Agency for International Cooperation.

Evaluation Based on International Standards

The assessment was carried out using the Sustainability Standards Comparison Tool, a methodology developed with contributions from more than 200 national and international experts representing governments, academia, standard-setting organizations, businesses and civil society.

The development of the framework also involved organizations such as the International Trade Centre and the ISEAL Alliance.
The evaluation criteria are aligned with internationally recognized agreements, including standards established by the International Labour Organization.

Strong Scores Across Key Sustainability Categories

According to the assessment:

  • 100% compliance with all minimum credibility criteria
  • 100% compliance with social responsibility requirements
  • 88% score in environmental performance

The latest result upgrades CmiA from its previous “Very Good Choice” rating to the highest possible classification of “Excellent.”

Supporting Sustainable Cotton Production

Cotton made in Africa is one of the world’s largest sustainability initiatives for cotton production, promoting environmentally responsible farming while improving the livelihoods of smallholder cotton farmers across Africa.

The new recognition reinforces CmiA’s position as a trusted sustainability standard for brands, retailers and consumers seeking responsibly produced cotton within global textile supply chains.
