SeaDyes Secures Funding to Advance Seaweed-Based Textile Dyes

A Scotland-based startup is pushing the boundaries of sustainable textile innovation after securing new funding aimed at accelerating the development of bio-based dye alternatives.

SeaDyes has received £200,000 in funding through Scottish Enterprise as part of its High Growth Spinout Programme. The investment marks a key milestone as the company transitions into its company creation phase and strengthens its commercial positioning within the textile sector.

A Natural Alternative to Synthetic Dyes

SeaDyes is developing seaweed-based textile dyes designed to replace conventional petroleum-based synthetic dyes, which are widely associated with environmental pollution and high chemical usage.

The startup has already produced early dye prototypes and initiated engagement with potential industry partners, signaling growing interest in alternative dyeing solutions as sustainability pressures intensify across global textile supply chains.

From Marine Science to Textile Innovation

The company was founded in 2023 by Jessica Giannotti, who originally developed the concept through the Scottish Association for Marine Science before launching SeaDyes as a standalone venture.

Since early 2025, the company has been operating from the The James Hutton Institute in Invergowrie, where it benefits from access to specialized research facilities, laboratory infrastructure, and commercial support services provided by Hutton Scientific Services.

Strengthening Scotland’s Bio-Based Textile Ecosystem

The funding is expected to accelerate SeaDyes’ transition from research to commercialization, enabling the company to refine its technology, build a scalable business model, and attract further investment.

Industry observers note that innovations such as seaweed-based dyes could play a significant role in reducing the environmental footprint of textile dyeing, one of the most resource-intensive stages in garment production.

By combining marine science with textile applications, SeaDyes represents a growing trend toward bio-based solutions and circular material innovation within the industry.

Industry Shift Toward Sustainable Dyeing

As global brands face increasing pressure to reduce water consumption, eliminate hazardous chemicals, and lower carbon emissions, alternative dye technologies are gaining momentum.

SeaDyes’ approach aligns with broader industry efforts to move away from fossil fuel-based inputs and toward renewable, biodegradable resources. If successfully scaled, such innovations could contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally responsible textile value chain.

Looking Ahead

With initial funding secured and early prototypes developed, SeaDyes is now focused on advancing its commercialization strategy and establishing itself as a high-growth player in the sustainable textiles space.

The company’s progress reflects a wider shift in the industry, where innovation in materials and processes is becoming central to long-term competitiveness and environmental responsibility.
