The International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) has published its updated projections for the 2025/26 cotton season, forecasting stable production and consumption levels. Global cotton output is expected to reach approximately 26 million tonnes, while consumption is estimated at 25.7 million tonnes. Meanwhile, global cotton trade is set to recover modestly, with a 2% increase projected, totaling 9.7 million tonnes.
Regionally, production gains are anticipated in Brazil, the USA, and West Africa. However, these will likely be offset by a slight decline in China’s output. Despite this, China remains the world’s top cotton producer, expected to yield around 6.3 million tonnes following a record-breaking 2257 kg/ha yield in the previous season.
While trade is on the rise due to larger carryover stocks and projected mill demand, the ICAC cautions that upcoming tariffs, regulatory challenges, and fiber market competition could dampen overall cotton consumption and global trade flows.
