Iran and Pakistan have agreed to convene the 9th Joint Economic Committee (JEC) meeting in Tehran next month, marking another step toward strengthening bilateral trade, investment, and transportation cooperation.
The decision was reached during a meeting between Hamid Zadboum, Head of Iran’s Trade Promotion Organization (TPO), and Pakistan’s Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs, where both sides reviewed major areas of collaboration and explored mechanisms to enhance economic and infrastructural ties.
Expanding Trade and Transport Cooperation
During the talks, Iranian and Pakistani officials discussed several strategic topics, including bilateral trade facilitation, joint investment projects, and transportation development.
It was decided that the upcoming 9th Joint Economic Committee session will be hosted by Iran’s Ministry of Industry, Mining, and Trade, alongside the 5th Iran–Pakistan Free Trade Committee meeting, to be held on its sidelines.
Senior representatives from Iran’s Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Transport and Urban Development, and Energy also held parallel meetings with their Pakistani counterparts to discuss electricity exports, as well as maritime, road, and rail cooperation aimed at improving regional connectivity.
Building on Past Agreements
Mr. Zadboum’s visit to Pakistan was part of a high-ranking Iranian delegation led by Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who visited Islamabad to discuss regional developments, cooperation within the Muslim world, and the promotion of bilateral relations.
The Iran–Pakistan Joint Economic Committee plays a central role in advancing economic collaboration between the two nations. On Iran’s side, it is chaired by the Ministry of Transport and Urban Development, while Pakistan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs leads from the other side.
The 8th JEC meeting, held in Islamabad in July 2019, resulted in a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at boosting trade and investment, signed by Iran’s then Minister of Industry, Mining and Trade Reza Rahmani and Pakistan’s Adviser on Commerce, Textile, Industries, Production, and Investment Abdul Razak Dawood.
The upcoming meeting in Tehran is expected to open a new chapter of economic cooperation, reinforcing both countries’ commitment to expanding trade relations and fostering long-term regional partnerships.
