Isfahan’s Textile Industry at a Crossroads: Tradition, Challenges, and the Urgent Call for Modernization

Editorial – Kohan Textile Journal

Isfahan, long recognized as the cradle of Iran’s textile heritage, continues to stand as the nation’s leading industrial province. With nearly 40% of Iran’s textile capacity concentrated in this region and over 200,000 workers employed across more than 2,000 industrial units and 3,000 workshops, Isfahan remains a cornerstone of Iran’s industrial and economic strength.

However, this historic industry now faces serious challenges. More than 70% of textile machinery is outdated, drastically reducing competitiveness in both local and international markets. Meanwhile, uncontrolled imports, energy shortages, and financial obstacles—including restrictive banking regulations and high production costs—have left many manufacturers struggling to survive.

As the Kohan Textile Journal editorial board observes, the situation is paradoxical. Once hailed as the “Manchester of the Middle East,” Isfahan possesses all the ingredients for success—skilled labor, industrial infrastructure, and access to raw materials—yet it lacks a unified modernization strategy. In contrast, regional competitors such as Turkey and Uzbekistan are rapidly upgrading facilities and expanding export market share once dominated by Iranian producers.

Untapped Potential and the Path Forward

Despite these pressures, Isfahan’s textile sector retains enormous potential. The province continues to lead Iran in the production of machine-made carpets and high-value textiles, both recognized internationally for their craftsmanship and quality. The region’s self-sufficiency in raw materials and its deep-rooted tradition of artistry could become the foundation for a new era of innovation and sustainability—if supported by targeted reforms.

Industry experts interviewed by Kohan Textile Journal emphasize three urgent priorities:

  • Modernization of textile machinery through financing and technology transfer programs.
  • Strategic government and financial sector support to lower production costs and improve liquidity.
  • International branding and market diversification to rebuild global confidence in Iranian textiles.

As one member of the Isfahan Chamber of Commerce noted, “Textiles provide the highest levels of employment and economic resilience in the province. With the right support, this sector can once again become a global player.”

A Call for Coordinated Modernization

At Kohan Textile Journal, we believe the time has come for Iran’s policymakers, financial institutions, and private sector leaders to unite behind a national textile modernization plan. Revitalizing Isfahan’s textile industry would not only safeguard hundreds of thousands of jobs but also restore Iran’s standing as a regional textile powerhouse.

If modernization efforts succeed, Isfahan could reclaim its place as a global center of textile excellence, ensuring that Iran’s thousand-year-old textile legacy continues to thrive well into the 21st century

  1. I would like to add a point: cost of production is a problem with requirement for modernization. Based on my personal experience during visiting Iranian spinning industry I found there is little attention towards process optimization for cost cutting, including process design, low productivity issue even in latest plants, material cost, and energy cost sectors.
I will be happy to help if some company is interested to explore cooperation in above mentioned area

    • Thank you very much for sharing this valuable insight.
Your observation regarding the rising cost of production and the need for deeper process optimization is absolutely valid. Despite having strong technical foundations, many Iranian spinning and textile factories still face challenges in efficiency management, workflow design, energy use, and overall productivity — even when operating modern machinery.

This gap between equipment investment and operational optimization is one of the core issues highlighted in the article. Without systematic process engineering, benchmarking, and continuous improvement frameworks, modernization cannot achieve its full impact.

We appreciate your willingness to share expertise and support companies that are interested in implementing cost-cutting strategies through process optimization, energy management, and better workflow design. Such collaborations are essential for helping Iran’s textile industry strengthen its competitiveness and move toward a more modern, efficient, and sustainable future.

If any industry members or factory owners reading this are interested in cooperation, we would be glad to help facilitate the connection.

Thank you again for contributing to this important discussion.
