Iran Emerges as the Leading Cotton Seed Market in the Middle East

The global cotton seed market, valued at USD 1.57 billion in 2025, is projected to reach USD 2.08 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 5.82%. Within this global outlook, Iran stands out as the largest and fastest-growing market for cotton seeds in the Middle East, positioning itself as a key player in the regional supply chain for textiles and agriculture.

Cotton remains one of the world’s most important agricultural commodities, providing essential raw materials for apparel, carpets, and a wide range of industrial applications. Advances in molecular biology, hybrid breeding, and biotechnology have reshaped the industry, with hybrid cotton seeds now representing over 94% of the global market. Traits such as insect resistance (IR) and herbicide tolerance (HT) have accelerated adoption, particularly in Asia, Oceania, and North America.

Global Market Dynamics

According to industry data, global cotton cultivation covered 33.2 million hectares in 2022, a decline of nearly 4% compared to 2017 due to fluctuating commodity prices and water shortages in key growing regions. India remains the global leader, accounting for 41.3% of total planted area, while Africa has become the second-largest producer with 15.1% of global acreage, supported by subsidies and improved infrastructure. South America, particularly Brazil, is emerging as the fastest-growing region with a 51.8% increase in cultivated area between 2017 and 2022.

The Strategic Role of Iran

Despite challenges such as water scarcity and limited arable land, Iran has established itself as the most dynamic cotton seed market in the Middle East. Modern hybrid varieties, resistant to drought and pests, are increasingly adopted, enhancing resilience and ensuring stable yields. This transition underscores the country’s strategic position in regional textile supply chains, particularly as demand for locally sourced raw materials rises.

Currently, Iran’s textile industry requires between 180,000–200,000 tons of cotton annually, of which only around 40% is supplied domestically. With 80,000–85,000 hectares under cultivation, production covers roughly 60,000 tons per year. However, the country holds the potential to expand cultivation to 200,000 hectares and produce up to 500,000 tons of cotton, enough not only to achieve self-sufficiency but also to generate surplus for export.

A Call for Strategic Investment

To reach this potential, investment in modern breeding programs, irrigation systems, and mechanization will be critical. Redirecting financial resources currently allocated to imports toward domestic production could transform Iran into a fully self-sufficient producer. With the right policies and sustainable agricultural practices, the country could also emerge as a reliable exporter of cotton in regional and global markets.

Conclusion

As the global cotton seed industry continues to evolve toward advanced hybrid varieties, Iran’s growing role in the Middle East is increasingly evident. Positioned at the intersection of tradition and innovation, the country has the potential not only to secure its textile sector’s raw material needs but also to play a defining role in the region’s contribution to the global cotton supply chain.
