In a move to address growing concerns over microplastic contamination from textiles, Cotton Incorporated has unveiled a new educational hub titled “Breaking Free From Plastics”, hosted on its Cotton Today platform. The resource aims to inform consumers, brands, and suppliers about the environmental benefits of natural fibers—particularly cotton—over synthetic alternatives.
With synthetic fibers accounting for 70% of the global fiber market and contributing significantly to microplastic pollution, the hub serves as a science-backed, action-oriented guide to reduce environmental harm. According to the Environmental Coalition on Standards, textile-related microplastics release up to 500,000 tons annually into the world’s oceans.
The hub includes:
- Peer-reviewed research on the biodegradability of cotton vs. synthetics
- Actionable guidance for reducing plastic pollution through informed fiber choices
- Environmental data highlighting cotton’s role in circular economy models
- Sustainability leadership resources showcasing Cotton Incorporated’s ongoing efforts
“Plastic pollution is a global crisis that we can begin addressing right now through better data sharing, education, and coordinated action,” said Jesse Daystar, Ph.D., Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer at Cotton Incorporated. “This hub provides clear, credible information on the impacts of our fiber choices and empowers both supply chains and consumers to adopt proven solutions—like switching to natural fibers such as cotton.”
As microplastic pollution becomes a mounting environmental and public health issue, Cotton Incorporated’s new initiative positions cotton as a key part of the solution, reinforcing its biodegradability and alignment with sustainable fashion and manufacturing goals.
