Biancalani and Shinwa Co.: 30 Years of Textile Machinery Partnership in Japan

Inside Biancalani’s thirty-year partnership with Japan’s Shinwa Co. – A conversation with Takayuki Suzuki, President of Shinwa Co., Biancalani’s exclusive partner agency in Japan

In the world of textiles, machinery is only half the story. The other half is trust, built market by market, relationship by relationship. In Japan, that trust has a name: Shinwa Co. For more than three decades, the Tokyo-based agency has served as Biancalani’s local voice, bringing the company’s Italian-made innovation into one of the world’s most exacting manufacturing cultures.

We spoke with Takayuki Suzuki, head of Shinwa Co., about how the partnership began, what keeps it working, and why Biancalani’s unmistakable red machines have become a familiar sight on the floors of Japan’s most prestigious textile mills.

A partnership rooted in service

Shinwa Co.’s story predates its collaboration with Biancalani by decades. “We began operations in July 1990,” Suzuki explains. “We import and distribute high-end machinery from various countries, mainly in Europe, but our core strength is our commitment to after-sales service. We believe reliable technical support is just as important as the machinery itself for long-term client satisfaction.”

That philosophy would prove to be the perfect match for a brand built on precision engineering and hands-on care.

A brochure, a trade show, and a towel dryer

“The project began with a request from a customer looking for a high-quality towel dryer,” Suzuki recalls. “I had recently seen the AIRO®24 at a trade show and was very interested in it, so I contacted Biancalani immediately, based on a brochure I had on hand.”

It was a small spark that lit a lasting partnership, one built not on a single machine, but on an ongoing exchange of ideas.

The eyes and ears on the ground

“Our main role is to accurately convey our clients’ feedback, both positive and negative, to Biancalani. They are an excellent partner because they listen carefully and successfully incorporate this market feedback into their machine upgrades.”

It’s this feedback loop, Suzuki suggests, that keeps Biancalani’s technology evolving in step with real market needs, rather than in isolation from them.

“This is Italian Design!”

“A consistent episode we experience involves the striking visual impact of the machinery,” he says. “Although clients review the catalogs and approve the specifications beforehand, they are always surprised when the equipment arrives at their facilities.”
“In traditional Japanese textile mills, where machinery is predominantly painted in muted blues or greens, Biancalani’s vibrant signature red stands out remarkably. Our clients view this very positively, often admiring it with comments like, ‘This is Italian design!’”

Irreplaceable, even in a price-driven market

“In the current Japanese market, standard commodity machinery is increasingly being replaced by lower-priced alternatives. However, when it comes to producing a premium texture and ‘hand-feel’ that truly resonates with human sensibility, Biancalani’s machinery remains absolutely irreplaceable.”

“Biancalani’s unique technology delivers an emotional value to textiles that cannot be replicated by cost-driven alternatives,” he adds, “and we sincerely hope they continue their dedication to crafting machinery that speaks directly to human touch and emotion.”

The towel connection and Imabari’s exacting standards

“The sector most indissolubly linked to Biancalani is undoubtedly our terry towel manufacturers. In Japan, Imabari Towel is a world-renowned regional heritage brand, famous for uncompromising product standards that strictly evaluate water absorbency, premium texture, and plush thickness. To consistently achieve and maintain these exceptionally high standards, Biancalani’s AIRO®24 has become an absolute necessity in their production lines.”

Colleagues and a shared appreciation for good food

“Working with the team in Italy is a true pleasure; they perfectly balance a cheerful, vibrant personality with a deeply professional and serious work ethic. Another wonderful trait shared by every team member is their passionate appreciation for gastronomy. Whenever they visit Japan, I thoroughly enjoy planning our culinary itineraries and introducing them to various aspects of Japanese food culture.”

From flagship to rising star: AIRO®24 and AQUARIA®

“In terms of established brand awareness, the AIRO®24 remains our flagship and most famous model. However, we have recently seen growing interest in the AQUARIA®. Because of its high versatility in open-width wet processing, such as enzymatic bio-polishing and desizing, it is attracting strong attention not just from towel manufacturers, but from a wide variety of textile producers looking to upgrade their fabric finishing processes.”

A message for those who don’t yet know Biancalani

“If companies are facing issues with traditional textile processing, Biancalani can provide the right solutions. As seen with Imabari Towel, adopting their technology brings significant improvements to conventional workflows, increasing both efficiency and final product quality.”

Shinwa Co. has been Biancalani’s exclusive partner agency in Japan for over thirty years, representing the AIRO®24 and AQUARIA® product lines across the Japanese textile industry.
