HKUST, Crystal Group, and HKRITA Launch Landmark Partnership to Transform Global Textile Industry with AI

In a groundbreaking move to accelerate smart manufacturing, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has signed a strategic tripartite framework agreement with Crystal International Group Limited (Crystal Group) and the Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (HKRITA). The collaboration aims to revolutionize the textile and apparel sector through the integration of cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, including the development of a dedicated industry-specific large language model, “Textile-GPT.”

The alliance seeks to embed AI deeply across the textile production value chain — from intelligent design and optimized manufacturing to automated quality control and data-driven supply chain management. Additionally, the initiative will advance smart wearable development and sustainable innovation, positioning Hong Kong as a leading hub for AI-powered industrial transformation.

Textile AI Innovation Hub and AI-as-a-Service Model

As part of the agreement, the three partners will establish a Textile AI Innovation Hub, serving as a nucleus for AI research and industrial application. The hub will incubate new tools and technologies while also promoting AI-as-a-Service (AIaaS) solutions to support startups and empower industry players with accessible, standardized AI capabilities.
The collaboration also places strong emphasis on talent development, aiming to cultivate a new generation of cross-disciplinary professionals through joint training programs, R&D projects, and international forums focused on “AI + Textiles.”

From R&D to Real-World Impact

The strategic alliance will focus on three key pillars:

  • Industry-Specific Large Language Models (LLMs): Leveraging HKUST’s advanced AI research, HKRITA’s textile expertise, and Crystal Group’s operational data, the initiative will develop a Textile-GPT capable of navigating materials science, process optimization, and market trends through powerful knowledge graphs and predictive analytics.
  • AI Agents for Intelligent Production: Advanced AI agents powered by multimodal LLMs will streamline fiber development, enhance production efficiency, and automate quality inspection — reshaping textile manufacturing at scale.
  • Smart Wearables and Circular Economy Solutions: The initiative will pioneer smart apparel technologies, virtual fitting experiences, and AI-driven sustainability practices, contributing to greener and more adaptive fashion ecosystems.

Leaders Speak: A Vision for Future-Ready Manufacturing

“HKUST is proud to lead this visionary collaboration. This is about turning innovation into competitive advantage and policy into impact,” said Prof. Tim Cheng, Vice-President for Research and Development at HKUST. “By combining academic excellence, industry insights, and R&D capabilities, we are laying the groundwork for a high-tech, sustainable manufacturing future.”

Mr. Andrew Lo, CEO of Crystal International Group Limited, emphasized the transformative role of AI: “This partnership allows us to push the boundaries of digital transformation and implement scalable smart manufacturing models that meet both economic and environmental demands.”

Echoing the ambition, Mr. Jake Koh, CEO of HKRITA, added: “Hong Kong has always been a global textile player — now, it’s time to lead in industrial AI. This initiative marks the start of a new chapter for our city and the global industry.”

Shaping the Future of the $1.5 Trillion Textile Industry

The global textile and apparel industry, valued at over $1.5 trillion, is ripe for disruption. With this pioneering collaboration, Hong Kong sets a new benchmark for how traditional industries can evolve through innovation, sustainability, and intelligent automation — reinforcing its position as a forward-looking center for industrial AI excellence.
