Tajikistan has harvested approximately 60,000 tons of cotton as of September 18, according to official local media sources. The crop has been collected from 185,817 hectares of farmland, representing over 16% of the country’s production forecast for the current year. Due to rising domestic and regional demand for cotton — as well as export opportunities — the government has expanded cotton cultivation, partly replacing grain and fodder crop fields.
“It was announced that cotton harvesting in Tajikistan began in late August in the southern regions of the republic,” the Ministry of Agriculture stated through its press office.
Regional Harvest Performance Strengthens Tajikistan’s Cotton Outlook
The Khatlon region remains the country’s leading producer, recording 45,759 tons of harvested cotton. In the Sughd region, production reached 12,404 tons, while districts under Republican Subordination contributed an additional 1,250 tons.
Tajikistan’s cotton industry has shown steady performance in recent years. In 2017, the country harvested 380,000 tons, a 5.2% increase compared to 2016. Historically, cotton was one of Tajikistan’s top export commodities until the mid-2000s, and recent production strategies signal renewed focus on revitalizing the sector.
As global demand for high-quality cotton rises, Tajikistan’s expanded cultivation could further strengthen its position in regional textile supply chains and export markets.
