Interview with Mr. Aly Elkabeer, Egyptian Cotton Association

As one of the most prestigious cotton varieties in the world, Egyptian cotton is celebrated for its superior softness, strength, and durability. At the forefront of safeguarding its legacy and ensuring authenticity is the Egyptian Cotton Association, which works under the supervision of the Egyptian Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Alexandria Cotton Exporters Association.

In this exclusive video interview, Mr. Aly Elkabeer, representative of the Egyptian Cotton Association, discusses the significance of the Egyptian Cotton logo, the licensing program, and the extensive efforts being made to promote Egyptian cotton and its products worldwide. He also highlights recent government investments in modernizing the textile industry and the role of Egypt’s cotton sector in the global supply chain.

Q: What does the Egyptian Cotton logo represent?

Aly Elkabeer: The logo belongs to the Egyptian Ministry of Trade and Industry and is managed by the Alexandria Cotton Exporters Association. When a company is licensed to use this logo, it means their product is certified to contain 100% Egyptian cotton, with no mixing or blending with other types of cotton.

Q: What are the benefits of being a licensed user of the Egyptian Cotton logo?

Aly Elkabeer: There are several key benefits:

1. Global Recognition: Licensed companies gain access to major retailers worldwide that recognize and value the Egyptian Cotton trademark.
2. Direct Marketing Support: Your company’s name and products will be listed on the official Egyptian Cotton website, providing exposure to a broad, international audience.
3. Trade Show Visibility: Licensed products are eligible to be showcased at international exhibitions where we promote Egyptian cotton, such as Heimtextil in Germany and other shows in India and beyond.

Q: Can you explain the different types of Egyptian cotton categories under the “Giza” name?

Aly Elkabeer: Yes, “Giza” is the primary name associated with Egyptian cotton, but it includes various categories:
– Giza 86
– Giza 92
– Giza 94

We also have premium categories like “Giza 45”, which is considered one of the finest cotton fibers in the world.

Q: What types of products are promoted under the Egyptian Cotton brand?

Aly Elkabeer: We promote a wide range of products made from Egyptian cotton — from bedding sheets and pillowcases to bathrobes and dyed fabrics. The unique specifications of Egyptian cotton — such as its softness, durability, and breathability — make it highly sought-after worldwide.

Q: Which global brands are currently using licensed Egyptian cotton?

Aly Elkabeer: Several well-known global brands use Egyptian cotton in their products. For example, White Company and John Lewis in the UK insist on using licensed Egyptian cotton, ensuring their products carry the official logo and maintain 100% purity.

Q: How important is the cotton industry to Egypt’s economy?

Aly Elkabeer: The cotton and spinning industry is one of the oldest in Egypt and remains a critical part of our economy, employing about 25% of the total industrial workforce. The Egyptian government has recognized its importance and is now investing over 31 billion EGP to modernize spinning mills, ginning facilities, and textile factories.

Q: What recent steps has the Egyptian government taken to support this industry?

Aly Elkabeer: We’ve recently inaugurated three new ginning facilities, and one more was launched two years ago. Additionally, several new spinning mills equipped with state-of-the-art global technology are under development. This modernization effort reflects the government’s strong commitment to revitalizing the cotton and textile sector.
