Bangladesh’s Economic Attaché in Tehran, Mohammed Sabour Hussein, has called for the expansion of economic and trade cooperation between Bangladesh and Iran, despite the impact of international sanctions on bilateral commerce.
He made the remarks during a meeting with members of the Kashan Chamber of Commerce, Mines and Industries on Wednesday in the city of Kashan, where both sides discussed ways to revive and strengthen trade ties.
According to Hussein, the volume of trade between the two countries has dropped by nearly 60 percent as a result of what he described as unfair economic sanctions imposed on Iran. He emphasized that Bangladesh is keen to increase trade exchanges once again by identifying new areas of cooperation and removing existing bottlenecks.
Kashan’s Carpet Industry Seen as Key Trade Bridge
Highlighting potential sectors for renewed cooperation, the Bangladeshi official pointed to Kashan’s well-known carpet and carpet-weaving industry as a strategic opportunity to boost bilateral trade.
He noted that Bangladesh is one of the world’s major producers of carpet lace, creating strong potential for collaboration between Kashan’s traditional carpet manufacturing capabilities and Bangladesh’s large-scale lace and textile production sector.

Both sides reportedly expressed interest in exploring joint production, raw material exchange, and market access opportunities, particularly in the wider textile and floor covering industries.
The meeting reflects Bangladesh’s broader efforts to diversify its international trade partnerships and to maintain economic engagement with Iran despite ongoing geopolitical and economic challenges. Strengthening cooperation in traditional industries such as carpets and textiles is viewed as a practical step toward reviving bilateral trade flows.
