Despite global economic volatility and mounting competition, Tunisia’s textile and apparel industry continues to demonstrate exceptional resilience, maintaining its position among the European Union’s top suppliers. The sector’s steady performance underscores its critical role as both an economic driver and a regional manufacturing leader.
A Pillar of Tunisia’s Economy
The Tunisian textile and clothing industry encompasses around 1,880 companies, of which 90% are export-oriented. Foreign investment remains a cornerstone of the sector — 45% of these enterprises are joint ventures with international partners. Collectively, the industry accounts for 20% of national exports and employs roughly 176,000 workers, representing over 30% of Tunisia’s manufacturing workforce.
According to Haythem Bouajila, President of the Tunisian Federation of Textile and Clothing, the industry’s exports have surpassed TND 6 billion, maintaining a stable trajectory despite international market fluctuations and rising competition from regional players such as Egypt. “Tunisian textile products are increasingly moving upmarket,” Bouajila said on Mosaïque FM, highlighting the sector’s strategic pivot toward quality and innovation as key differentiators.
Sustained Export Growth to the EU
Tunisia’s export figures underscore its growing strength. Between 2019 and 2023, textile exports to the EU rose from €1.966 billion to €2.358 billion, even as the EU’s overall textile imports fell by 16.22%.
- In 2023, the sector recorded:
- 6.8% growth in clothing exports, reaching TND 8.18 billion
- 3.07% increase in textile exports
- 5.61% overall rise in total exports, reaching nearly TND 9.7 billion
- 12.5 percentage-point improvement in the trade balance
Tunisia now ranks as the 10th largest clothing supplier to the EU, surpassing nations such as the United Kingdom, Sri Lanka, and Egypt — a remarkable achievement that highlights its growing importance in the European supply chain.
Challenges and the Road to Sustainability
Despite these achievements, the industry faces ongoing structural challenges, including skilled labor shortages, logistical inefficiencies, and a persistent parallel market. Yet, Tunisian manufacturers are proactively addressing these issues through modernization and sustainability initiatives.
Under its 2030 sustainability roadmap, Tunisia aims to:
- Recycle 90% of wastewater used in textile manufacturing
- Cut the sector’s carbon footprint by 30%
These eco-focused goals are designed to align Tunisia with global sustainability standards and strengthen its partnerships with environmentally conscious European brands.
A Future Built on Quality and Responsibility
With government support, private-sector investment, and an emphasis on innovation, sustainability, and value-added production, Tunisia’s textile sector stands as a model of resilience and strategic adaptation. Rather than merely enduring global turbulence, Tunisia is charting a path toward responsible growth, reinforcing its reputation as a trusted partner in ethical and competitive textile manufacturing.
