The Sustainable Textiles of the Asian Region (STAR) Network has announced its support for the UN Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action, marking a significant step in aligning Asia’s textile and apparel manufacturing base with global climate goals.
The STAR Network unites nine national associations from Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Myanmar, Pakistan, and Vietnam, representing nearly 35,000 manufacturers with an annual production value of US $420 billion. By joining the Charter, STAR ensures that Asia’s suppliers—who form the backbone of global fashion—are represented in efforts to cap temperature rise at 1.5°C, achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, and scale circular business models.
Chairman Fazlee Shamim Ehsan, also Executive President of BKMEA, hailed the move as “a major milestone” that ensures supplier voices are central in shaping the industry’s climate future. STAR Secretariat head Sovichea Saron added that the commitment demonstrates readiness to match “global climate goals with local action.”
As a supporting organization, STAR will participate in renewable energy initiatives, supplier training, and collaborative projects on sustainable production and transparent supply chains. The partnership strengthens Asia’s role as a regional advocate for a climate-resilient and inclusive garment industry.
