Remora and BST Join Forces to Bring Biofilm-Prevention Tech to Textile Industry

Scottish biotech firm Remora has partnered with Swiss textile chemical innovator Beyond Surface Technologies (BST) to introduce a groundbreaking biofilm prevention solution to the textile market. This collaboration aims to enhance the durability, hygiene, and sustainability of performance wear, outdoor apparel, and technical fabrics.

Biofilms—clusters of microscopic organisms that adhere to fabric surfaces—pose a persistent challenge in the textile sector. They can cause lingering odours, discoloration, material degradation, and even skin irritation, despite frequent washing. Remora’s solution tackles this issue at its source.

Inspired by natural defense systems in red seaweed, Remora’s proprietary technology offers a sustainable alternative to toxic biocidal treatments. Unlike traditional antimicrobials, it prevents biofilm formation without harming users or the environment.

“Our Remora technology offers a sustainable, scientifically proven alternative to toxic biocidal treatments and will help brands tackle persistent odour, staining and material degradation caused by biofilms,” said Dr. Yvonne Davies, Chief Commercial Officer at Remora.

Through BST’s global supply chain and green chemistry expertise, Remora’s innovation is expected to reach major fashion and technical textile brands worldwide. The partnership represents a strategic leap forward in the development of textiles that are not only cleaner and safer but also more sustainable.

“This collaboration doesn’t just scale our technology,” added Davies, “it unlocks its full potential to support a cleaner, safer and more sustainable future for textiles.”
