Top 13 Textile Manufacturers in South Africa

South Africa is one of the most important markets for the textile and apparel industry in Africa. South Africa is among the Top 10 Most Developed Countries in Africa and the textile industry after the mining and the automobile industry is one of the key industries in South Africa’s economic growth.

The textile industry in South Africa is an important sector of the country’s economy, employing tens of thousands of people and contributing to both domestic consumption and exports. The industry is diverse and encompasses a range of activities, including the production of clothing, home textiles, technical textiles, and nonwoven fabrics.

Despite these challenges, the textile industry remains an important contributor to the South African economy. According to the South African Textile Federation, the industry employs over 50,000 people and contributes around R7 billion to the country’s GDP annually.

In recent years, the South African government has implemented a number of measures to support the industry, including tariffs on certain textile imports, incentives for local production, and support for skills development and training. Despite the challenges facing the industry, the textile sector remains an important part of the South African economy and a significant source of employment.

The industry is comprised of a range of sub-sectors, including cotton, wool, and synthetic textiles, as well as clothing and home textile manufacturing. The textile industry in South Africa is primarily focused on the domestic market, with most of the products produced for local consumption.

However, there has been a growing trend towards the production of higher value-added products, such as technical textiles, which are used in industries such as automotive, medical, and construction. Additionally, there has been a push towards sustainable and ethical production practices, with many companies adopting environmentally-friendly processes and fair labor practices.

Overall, while the textile industry in South Africa faces significant challenges, it remains an important sector for the country’s economy and has the potential for growth and innovation in the future.

E-mail: info(at)mptrikam.co.za

Address: 24 Mint Road- Fordsburg- Johannesburg- Gauteng

The M&P Trikam story: The first thread of this textile journey started in 1913 where a young boy seeking a better life left his home in Gujrat, India.

Departing through the Bombay port now fondly known as Mumbai – he began his expedition to Durban, South Africa.
Originating from an upbringing and family of tailors, Trikam grasped the skill of tailoring at a very young age where he would carefully tailor and adjust simple items just as trousers and suit jackets. His devotion and passion of tailoring slowly developed into adoration for high-quality fabrics – as this curiosity grew Trikam made it his life work to seek out the highest quality of fabrics.

Not long after, Trikam found himself in the United Kingdom – during the time of the industrial revolution – seeking out woollen and suiting suppliers that would fulfil this dire need for quality to bring back to SA. To his success, his mission was complete as he established relationships with the best suppliers in the UK. Armed with an arsenal of great quality fabrics and knowledge, Trikam was able to open his first retail store in 1935 in Market Street which stored and sold woollen fabrics.

He called this store M&P Trikam which he ran with his two sons, Manilal and Parshotam with little knowledge of how this brand would later grow into generations.
