The Institut für Textiltechnik (ITA) of RWTH Aachen University has officially received approval for its joint initiative, “Textile Factory 7.0”, marking a significant step toward the establishment of a new textile technology and development centre in Mönchengladbach.
The ambitious project aims to create a forward-looking industrial estate designed to redefine regional textile production through advanced research, cross-sector innovation, and close collaboration between industry and academia.
A Collaborative Regional Initiative
The Textile Factory 7.0 project brings together a strong consortium of regional partners, including:
- The Hochschule Niederrhein – Research Institute for Textiles and Clothing
- The Association of the Northwest German Textile and Clothing Industry
- The Association of the Rhineland Textile and Clothing Industry
- The Textile Academy NRW
- WFMG – Wirtschaftsförderung Mönchengladbach GmbH
Together, the partners aim to position Mönchengladbach as a hub for next-generation textile innovation.

Integrating Energy, AI, and Biotechnology
Rather than examining technologies in isolation, Textile Factory 7.0 combines energy efficiency, artificial intelligence, robotics, and biotechnology within a single, fully operational real-world textile laboratory.
This integrated approach enables practical testing, validation, and implementation of advanced solutions under industrial conditions, strengthening the link between research and market-ready applications.
The initiative focuses on enhancing the sustainability, productivity, and attractiveness of regional textile production. By establishing the T7-Factory, the project is expected to create new jobs while reinforcing innovative textile research in Germany.
Kick-Off Event Scheduled for March 2026
The official kick-off event for the T7-Factory will take place on March 19, 2026, offering industry stakeholders the opportunity to explore the project’s four core themes:
- On-Demand Manufacturing
- MicroFactory Engineering
- Digital Textiles
- Biosphere
Experts from ITA will be available to provide insights into MicroFactory Engineering and Digital Textiles during the networking event. The event will be conducted in German.
Federal Support for Sustainable Innovation
The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), underlining the national importance of strengthening sustainable and technology-driven textile manufacturing.
With Textile Factory 7.0, RWTH Aachen and its partners aim to establish a blueprint for future textile production — combining digitalization, circularity, and biotechnology to build a more resilient and competitive industry.
Stakeholders interested in collaboration or updates on the project’s progress are encouraged to engage with the initiative as it moves forward.
