Prominent figures in Iran’s fashion and textile industry have called for urgent reforms in management practices and a stronger connection between academic institutions and the fashion sector. The statements were made during a recent industry event hosted by the Iranian Association of Fashion and Textile Designers, where stakeholders addressed critical challenges facing the country’s apparel and design ecosystem.
Sombat Hacoupian, Chairman of the Board at the Iranian Fashion and Textile Designers Association, emphasized that outdated management methods are hindering the industry’s full potential.
“We must not be ashamed to say that our management is outdated,” Hacoupian said. “To compete in a fast-evolving global market, we need to base our decisions on academic research and data-driven strategies.”
Iran’s apparel and textile sector has experienced significant growth in recent years, becoming a major contributor to national employment and local production. However, experts warn that without proper investment in innovation, design, and managerial talent, the industry may struggle to maintain its momentum.
Hacoupian stressed the importance of aligning university curricula with the realities of the industry. He proposed creating collaborative platforms that bring together experts in design, business management, and economics to foster innovation and global competitiveness.
“Modern fashion is not just about style — it requires advanced planning, technology, and market awareness,” he added. “Universities should adapt to the needs of the new generation and equip future professionals with practical tools to succeed.”
Participants also addressed the need for homegrown solutions, especially in research, product development, and fashion marketing. The event concluded with a call for deeper partnerships between academia and industry leaders to ensure that Iran’s fashion sector remains resilient, relevant, and globally competitive.
The Iranian Association of Fashion and Textile Designers continues to serve as a bridge between creative education and industrial growth, advocating for policy reform, international collaboration, and the elevation of design standards in Iran.
