Germany is interested in providing assistance for textile education: UGC

GIZ, a German-based organization, has expressed interest in providing more technical assistance to Bangladesh in the field of textiles education and building skilled human resources in the sector.

The company has proposed a new project called Higher Education and Leadership Development (HELD) for Sustainable Textiles in Bangladesh.

The company wants to start the proposed three-year project in 2021. The project will assist the Government of Bangladesh in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 Development Policy.

A three-members delegation led by GIZ’s project manager Dr. Christian Bachmann, met UGC member (administration) Prof. Dr. Muhammad Alamgir on Monday (February 8). During the meeting, he expressed interest in starting a new project. At this time UGC secretary (additional responsibilities) Ferdous Zaman, Additional Director of Planning and Development of the Commission Durga Rani Sarkar, and Deputy Director Roxana Laila were present.

Dr. Christian Bachmann said, ‘After the successful completion of the German-Bangladesh Higher Education Network for Sustainable Textiles project, they want to start a held project in Bangladesh. The project, worth about 30 crores (3 million Euros), will help in the expansion of higher education and the development of skilled human resources in the textile sector of Bangladesh. The project will develop research in the textile and readymade garments sector of the country and enhance the skills of the managers engaged in this sector. He hoped for the cooperation of the Government of Bangladesh in implementing the new project.

In this regard, UGC member Prof. Alamgir said, GIZ has proposed to start a new HELD project in the second phase of the evaluation of the HEST project. Undoubtedly it’s a piece of good news for the country. He said the proposed HELD project would go a long way in addressing the challenges of textile education in the country. Through this project, an intensive network will be established between the respective universities of Germany and Bangladesh in exchange for cooperation. He hoped that the country’s ready-made garment sector would benefit greatly from this.

The company has proposed to keep UGC, Bangladesh Technical Education Board, and Bangladesh Textiles University as the implementing agencies of the proposed project. The project will be under the Ministry of Education. The meeting was informed that various issues of the project will be finalized later.
