Interviewing Aysel Huseynova from the Azerbaijan Fashion Designers Association offers a unique insight into the burgeoning fashion landscape of Azerbaijan. With a decade-long career spanning various facets of the industry, Aysel brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the table.

As the founder of AFDA and the driving force behind the Baku Fashion Expo, she has played a pivotal role in nurturing local talent and elevating the country’s fashion profile on the global stage. In this interview, Aysel sheds light on AFDA’s vision, mission, and strategies for fostering creativity and innovation within Azerbaijan’s fashion sector. Additionally, she shares insights into the industry’s growth trajectory, social initiatives, and the significance of platforms like the Baku Fashion Expo in shaping Azerbaijan’s fashion narrative.

1- Please briefly describe yourself and your experience in the textile and fashion sector.

With a decade of experience in the local fashion market, my journey began as the Art Director of the largest fashion event in the region. Subsequently, I received invitations to prestigious projects in Baku, culminating in official accreditation from the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week organization.

Fashion Entrepreneur: Empowering Azerbaijan’s Industry

Inspired by a vision of empowering local talent, I founded the Azerbaijan Fashion Designers Association and initiated the Baku Fashion Expo. These platforms provide opportunities for designers to express themselves freely through various mediums such as runway shows, master classes, and installations. I continue to spearhead these projects while offering independent Fashion Business Consulting services to both local and international brands, contributing to the growth and recognition of Azerbaijan’s fashion industry.

2- What are AFDA’s responsibilities, vision and mission?

The primary responsibility and philosophy of the Azerbaijan Fashion Designers Association (AFDA) revolve around fostering freedom of self-expression in fashion through globally recognized platforms such as runway shows and exhibitions.

Additionally, AFDA is dedicated to supporting local designers in expanding their brands not only within Azerbaijan but also on the international stage. By providing avenues for creative expression and opportunities for growth, AFDA aims to elevate the profile of Azerbaijani designers and contribute to the advancement of the fashion industry both locally and globally.

3- How many members do you have and in which sectors?

The Azerbaijan Fashion Designers Association (AFDA) comprises 87 members representing various sectors of the fashion industry, including designers, textile manufacturers, journalists, photographers, stylists, and illustrators. This diverse membership base reflects AFDA’s commitment to fostering collaboration and innovation across different aspects of the fashion landscape.

AFDA: Fostering Collaboration and Innovation in Azerbaijan’s Fashion Industry

By bringing together professionals from diverse backgrounds, AFDA aims to create a vibrant and inclusive community that supports the growth and development of Azerbaijan’s fashion industry. Each member plays a valuable role in contributing to AFDA’s mission of promoting creativity, excellence, and sustainability within the Azerbaijani fashion sector.

4- Can you elaborate on how AFDA plans to achieve its mission of making Azerbaijan one of the most influential countries in fashion design within the CIS region?

Our members strive to adopt an extraordinary approach in their respective roles, aiming to elevate the reputation of our country as a hub of innovation and influence within our region. By pushing the boundaries of creativity and embracing innovation, they contribute to positioning Azerbaijan as a leading force in the fashion industry.

Through their commitment to excellence and originality, our members collectively work towards enhancing the visibility and impact of Azerbaijani fashion on the regional and international stage. This dedication to innovation and distinction underscores our collective efforts to redefine the standards of creativity and craftsmanship within our industry.

5- How do you evaluate Azerbaijan’s textile and fashion industry in general?

Azerbaijan’s textile and fashion industry shows promising potential as it embarks on its initial journey within the global fashion landscape. While still in its nascent stage, the industry demonstrates confidence and determination to establish itself as a significant player. With budding talent, innovative approaches, and growing recognition, Azerbaijan is poised to make a mark in the international fashion and textile arena. As infrastructure and support continue to develop, the industry is expected to flourish and contribute substantially to the country’s economy and cultural identity.

6- The “We Believe in Peace” social project stands out in the portfolio. How does AFDA integrate social responsibility into its activities, and what impact does it aim to achieve through such initiatives?

During a period of conflict in our nation, our designers, particularly women, initiated a project aimed at fostering a sense of unity and peace among our people. Despite the challenges posed by the ongoing war, they sought to inspire our nation to embrace a peaceful way of life.

Through their creative endeavors, they ingeniously incorporated military textiles into their designs, symbolizing a commitment to peace amidst turmoil. This project served as a powerful declaration of our unwavering belief in the possibility of harmony, even in times of conflict. By showcasing the transformative power of design, our designers exemplified the profound impact of art in promoting peace and resilience within our community.

7- Can you provide an overview of the Baku Fashion Expo and its significance within the Azerbaijani fashion industry?

The Baku Fashion Expo was conceived as a versatile platform, capable of hosting exhibitions, runway shows, and fashion discussions interchangeably. However, its core objective remained constant: to showcase established designers while unveiling emerging talents.

Baku Fashion Expo: Elevating Azerbaijani Fashion onto the Global Stage

The success of this initiative was underscored by its recognition by prestigious events like Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks. Notably, participants who showcased their work at the Baku Fashion Expo received invitations to these global stages, highlighting the event’s significance in fostering connections and propelling Azerbaijani fashion onto the international scene.
