Production in Azerbaijan’s clothing sector increased significantly during January–August 2020, marking a 32 percent rise compared to the same period in 2019. According to official data, total output from the textile, clothing, leather, and footwear industries reached AZN 314.6 million in the first eight months of the year.
Mixed Performance Across Textile and Related Industries
In addition to the strong growth in clothing production, Azerbaijan’s textile industry recorded a 4.7 percent increase year-on-year. However, the leather and footwear sector experienced a 6.3 percent decline, highlighting an uneven performance across different segments of the industry.
Beyond textile-related fields, the country’s import data also showed notable shifts. Imports of air conditioners fell by 30.6 percent, totaling 123,700 units valued at $29.5 million during the reporting period.

Meanwhile, imports of computing machines and related equipment surged by 22.8 percent, reaching 361,700 units with a total value of $71.5 million. This increase indicates strong domestic demand for digital and electronic technologies.
In contrast, imports of washing machines decreased by 9 percent, with 91,234 units worth $17.3 million entering the country during January–August 2020.
Additionally, Azerbaijan imported 132,300 tons of plastic and plastic products valued at $225.7 million, reflecting continued reliance on foreign plastic materials for manufacturing and commercial use.
