We Know Africa: Driving Defence Innovation at the Global Strategies Conference

The African market is now of great interest to the Turkish defence and textile industries. In our effort to create more market presence in Africa, Raff Military Textile also took part in the recent 4th Global Strategies in Defence and Aerospace Industry Conference held in Antalya from 30 January to 2 February, 2025.

Organised by Turkey’s Presidency of Defence Industries (SSB) and the Defence and Aerospace Industry Exporters’ Association (SSI), this event allowed experts and companies to talk about global defence strategies, supply chain management, and market expansion.

Africa: A Major Topic at the Antalya Conference

The key theme of this year’s conference was Africa’s increasing significance in the defence sector. Panel discussions focused on the region’s evolving security landscape, local production initiatives, and collaboration opportunities. Eray Yükseloğlu, Chairman of Raff Military Textile shared his 24 years of experience in African markets, offering valuable insights into the continent’s defence textile needs and trade dynamics.

At Raff Military Textile, we understand the potential and risks of operating in Africa. Those companies that are interested in entering this big and quickly developing market should consider several important factors:

  • Regional differences: Africa cannot be defined as one large market. Each country has its own regulatory landscape, business culture, and specific defence needs. Tailoring strategies to local conditions is essential for long-term success.
  • Local production and strategic partnerships: Establishing local production facilities and forging partnerships with African businesses can significantly improve market penetration and credibility. Local engagement increases trust and enhances the business operations.
  • Regulatory compliance and bureaucracy: Trade policies and regulatory requirements in Africa are vastly different. To successfully go through this process, one must be patient, have the right expertise, and know import/export procedures.
It is also crucial to establish long-term relationships. This is because, in today’s world, it is very important that partners and clients be well paired for the long term. Trust, consistency, and a commitment to local markets are more effective than short-term transactions.
