Sewing machine export of China drops 22 % in Jan-May ’20

According to the General Administration of Customs of China, the total sewing machine exports from the country have seen a significant fall in Jan.-May ’20 both in quantities and values.

The country exported sewing machines worth US $ 765.67 million in the first 5 months of 2020, falling significantly by 22.10 per cent on Y-o-Y basis. Particularly in May ’20, the export was down by 41.67 per cent over May ’19 as shipment of sewing machines valued at US $ 140 million in May this year as against US $ 240 million in the same month of the prior year.

Of all, the industrial sewing machine was the top exported product (sharing 50.45 per cent of total export value) as its shipment valued at US $ 386.03 million in the review period. However, amidst global economic slowdown, the values noted a yearly drop of 22.17 per cent.

The average monthly output of the Chinese industrial sewing machine export is US $ 77.20 million in 2020, whereas the same valued at US $ 98 million till May in 2019. The shipment of industrial sewing machines also tumbled by 25.27 per cent in quantity terms.

Furthermore, the export performance of the Chinese embroidery machine wasn’t positive and it declined by 44.32 per cent to get US $ 68.21 million revenues. Pre-sewing equipment and finishing equipment too noted a significant fall of 9.79 per cent on yearly basis to hit US $ 133.58 million. The parts of sewing machine saw an export worth US $ 116.37 million, which is a plunge of 20.22 per cent from a year earlier.

The household sewing machines were next in line, which declined by 12.78 per cent on Y-o-Y basis to clock US $ 61.47 million revenues.

It’s worth recalling here that China escalated by 1.27 per cent to export US $ 2.49 billion worth of sewing machinery products in 2019 and the fall in 2020 due to COVID-19 is obvious. The export may pick from August onwards and then only situation will clear for rest of the year.
