Swiss-led venture aims to build a global network of textile recycling plants through a franchise model, with Qatar becoming the first reference site in 2027
The textile industry is entering a new phase in its transition toward circular manufacturing. Swiss textile machinery leader Rieter has announced the launch of Recycling Powerhouse Ltd., a new venture designed to industrialize textile recycling on a global scale through standardized technologies, certified recycled yarn production, and a franchise-based business model.
Headquartered in Switzerland, Recycling Powerhouse brings together three technology leaders across the textile value chain:
- Rieter Group, specialist in spinning technologies.
- Säntis Textiles, a Swiss textile engineering company.
- Valvan Technologies, Belgium’s leading provider of automated textile sorting systems.
The initiative addresses one of the industry’s biggest challenges: despite growing sustainability commitments, less than 1% of used textiles are currently recycled into new textile products, largely due to technological limitations, inconsistent quality, and fragmented recycling practices.
Qatar Selected as the First Industrial Blueprint
One of the most significant aspects of the announcement is the selection of Qatar as the location for the world’s first Recycling Powerhouse franchise facility.
The industrial-scale recycling plant is scheduled to begin operations in early 2027 in partnership with Suhail Industrial Holding Group, marking the company’s entry into textile recycling after establishing a strong position in metal, stainless steel, plastic, and industrial recycling across the Middle East.
According to the partners, the Qatar facility will serve as the global blueprint for future franchise operations and demonstrate that textile-to-textile recycling can become both commercially viable and scalable.

Franchise Model Designed for Global Expansion
Unlike traditional machinery suppliers, Recycling Powerhouse will function as a global franchisor and systems integrator.
Franchise partners will receive:
- Standardized recycling technologies
- Engineering expertise
- Operational procedures
- Digital management solutions
- Technical training
- Auditing and certification services
- End-to-end traceability systems
Recycled yarns produced by franchisees will be marketed under a common brand while maintaining internationally verified quality standards.
Rieter Brings Advanced Fiber Recovery Technology
Rieter contributes one of the project’s key technologies: its expertise in fiber tearing and short-staple spinning.
The company’s tearing technology converts textile cutting waste into reusable fibers while preserving fiber quality far better than conventional recycling methods—a critical requirement for producing premium recycled yarns at industrial scale.
Combined with Rieter’s complete spinning systems, the technology aims to bridge one of the industry’s major technical barriers to high-quality textile recycling.
AI-Based Sorting Powers the Recycling Process
Belgium-based Valvan Technologies will provide advanced automated textile sorting solutions, including its well-known Fibersort system, which uses artificial intelligence to identify textiles based on fiber composition and color.
The company will also supply Trimclean, a system developed to prepare textile clips before fiber opening, improving recycling efficiency and material quality.
Industry Leaders See Circularity as a Growth Opportunity
Noel Norking, Managing Director of Recycling Powerhouse, said the company’s mission is to make textile recycling “simple, scalable and accessible to investors,” transforming the industry’s sustainability challenges into commercial opportunities.
Thomas Oetterli, CEO of Rieter Group, added that the venture combines advanced spinning technology, recycling expertise, and traceability solutions to unlock new business opportunities across machinery sales, engineering services, recycling technologies, and recycled yarn markets.
Why the Middle East Matters
The selection of Qatar highlights the growing strategic importance of the Middle East in the global circular textile economy.
Suhail Industrial Holding Group, headquartered in Qatar, has built its reputation as one of the region’s leading industrial recycling companies, specializing in processed non-ferrous metals, stainless steel, and plastic products.
With a diversified industrial network and extensive export operations, the group is now leveraging its industrial capabilities to become a global leader in textile recycling, making the partnership with Recycling Powerhouse a natural extension of its sustainability strategy.
For textile manufacturers and investors across the Middle East and Africa (MEA), the Qatar project represents more than a pilot facility. It demonstrates that industrial-scale textile recycling is becoming a commercially viable investment model capable of supporting regional circular economy ambitions while creating new opportunities in recycled yarn production.
Editor’s Insight
For the MEA region, this announcement carries significance far beyond the launch of another recycling initiative. Choosing Qatar as the first industrial franchise location reflects the region’s growing ambition to become a manufacturing and sustainability hub rather than merely a consumer market.
If the Recycling Powerhouse model proves successful, similar facilities could emerge across GCC countries, North Africa, and other textile-producing economies in the region. This would strengthen local supply chains, reduce dependence on virgin raw materials, and accelerate the adoption of circular textile manufacturing throughout the Middle East and Africa.
