Leading Consumers by Country

Nigeria leads sanitary product consumption in Africa, accounting for approximately 16% of total volume, followed by Egypt and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In value terms, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Ethiopia together comprised 29% of the total market value. Countries such as Mozambique and Sudan also reported strong per capita consumption growth rates, highlighting increased access to hygiene products.

Production Insights

Africa produced approximately 4.1 million tons of sanitary towels, tampons, napkins, and diapers in 2024, reflecting a 2.1% increase from the previous year. Production trends have shown steady growth at an annual rate of 5.3% since 2013. Nigeria, Egypt, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo accounted for 33% of total production, while Ethiopia, Tanzania, and South Africa contributed significantly as well. Sudan reported the highest growth in production, with a CAGR of 7.2%.

Import Trends

The African continent imported approximately 299,000 tons of sanitary products in 2024, marking an increase after two years of decline. Libya and South Africa led imports, accounting for nearly a quarter of the total. Somalia, Kenya, and Tanzania also reported notable import growth. In terms of value, Libya, South Africa, and Morocco topped the list, collectively making up 28% of total imports.

Export Performance

Exports of sanitary products from Africa reached 144,000 tons in 2024, slightly declining by 4.1% from the previous year. However, the long-term trend remains positive, with an annual growth rate of 8.1% since 2013. Egypt, South Africa, Ghana, and Tunisia were the largest exporters, representing 83% of total exports. Senegal recorded the highest growth rate among exporting nations. The total export value reached $523 million in 2024, with Egypt, South Africa, and Ghana accounting for 75% of this value.

Pricing Trends

The average import price for sanitary products in Africa stood at $2,807 per ton in 2024, showing an 8.3% decline from the previous year. Prices varied significantly among importing countries, with Kenya reporting the highest price per ton, while Côte d’Ivoire had the lowest. On the export side, the average price per ton was $3,632, reflecting a 5.5% increase from the prior year. Egypt commanded the highest export prices, whereas Senegal had the lowest.

Market Outlook

The African sanitary product market is set to expand steadily, driven by rising hygiene awareness, population growth, and increasing disposable incomes. While imports and exports continue to play a crucial role, domestic production is also expected to rise, enhancing market stability. Nigeria, Egypt, and South Africa will likely remain key players in both consumption and production, with other countries gaining prominence in the coming years.
