Global polyester yarn import continues to increase

The global trade of polyester yarn has been growing with a high CAGR (compound annual growth rate) as both import and export of polyester yarn significantly underpinned it, according to data from TexPro. The global trade of polyester yarn was $14,129.63 million in 2016, which increased to $17,474.83 million in 2018 with a growth rate of 23.68 per cent.

The total trade gained by 11.60 per cent in 2018 over the previous year. It is anticipated to reach $21,361.87 million in 2021 with a CAGR of 6.92 per cent from 2018, according to Fibre2Fashion’s market analysis tool TexPro.

The global import of polyester yarn import was $7,072.56 million in 2016, which grew to $8,241.46 million in 2018 with a growth rate of 16.53 per cent. Overall polyester yarn import surged by 6.45 per cent in 2018 over the previous year, and is anticipated to reach $9,591.42 million in 2021 with a CAGR of 5.19 per cent from 2018.

In terms of volume, the global import of polyester yarn was 3,711.36 thousand tonnes in 2016, which rose to 4,025.35 thousand tonnes in 2018 with a growth rate of 8.46 per cent. The overall import of polyester yarn increased by 2.58 per cent in 2018 over the import of polyester yarn in 2017. It is expected to stand at 4,587.17 thousand tonnes in 2021 with a CAGR of 4.45 per cent from 2018.

In 2018, China (2,298.82 thousand tonnes), India (710.99 thousand tonnes), Taiwan (270.18 thousand tonnes), South Korea (253.83 thousand tonnes) and Malaysia (207.72 thousand tonnes) were the key importers of polyester yarn across the globe, together comprising 92.94 per cent of total imports. These were followed by Indonesia (178.69 thousand tonnes), Thailand (159.50 thousand tonnes) and the US (62.95 thousand tonnes).

From 2013 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of import, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by China (75.69 per cent), India (18.00 per cent) and South Korea (16.92 per cent).

In value terms, China ($3,165.50 million), India ($1,434.17 million), Taiwan ($1,394.19 million), South Korea ($1,098.40 million), Indonesia ($625.95 million) and Thailand ($522.96 million) were the key importers of polyester yarn across the globe in 2018, together comprising 85.31 per cent of total import. These were followed by Malaysia ($292.61 million), US ($247.26 million), Italy ($239.70 million) and Spain ($171.05 million).

From 2013 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of import, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by China (52.73 per cent), Thailand (10.13 per cent) and India (5.44 per cent).
