Digital Printing of Military Camouflage Fabrics

All You Should Know About Camouflage Fabrics

With its special forces organizations, camouflage print is among the most widely recognized textile trends.

Although it has evolved into a famous and highly adaptable clothing print, camouflage’s original purpose has changed significantly.

We are looking into the roots of this design, the background of camouflage, and how it evolved to be a standard-style textile to highlight our appreciation of camo print and our fabulous collection of camouflage fabrics.

What Is the Definition of Camouflage Fabric?

The very first British regular army picked red as its official dress color. This hue was chosen when the initial regular Military was formed in 1645..

Instead, each force selected a unique set of colors as its official uniform. Russian, British, and French soldiers learned to choose blue, green, and red.

The British Military did not adopt the Khaki outfit until the late 1800s when they discovered that dull colors enhance concealment.

Using camouflage textiles, one can conceal individuals or devices from potential adversaries. Camouflage fabric provides a remarkable impact by keeping soldiers or devices invisible to attackers or pretending to be a typical environment feature.

For this purpose, clothes or clothing are colored in various hues, making the wearer invisible.

A Short Background

Covering forces and giving oneself a tactical edge over the opposition led to the invention of camouflage.

In the summer of 1902, the US Military tried to wear brown khaki clothes; in the winter of that same year, they changed to a greenish-brown hue. One of the early uses of camouflage was this. Throughout the First World War, the French started using the word “camouflage.”

The majority of the members of camouflage groups are designers or stylists who contribute to the development of patterns that conceal troops from aerial surveillance. In the era of aerial spying and potent weaponry, camouflage clothes could aid militaries in winning wars by helping them disappear from their surroundings.

Poor visibility clothes were necessary to prevent being spotted by heavy machine guns and surveillance aircraft..By the close of the Vietnam War, several camouflage patterns were utilized sporadically. However, it wasn’t until the 1970s and 1980s that black, brown, green, and khaki patterning became the norm.

All US army divisions were allowed to use it. Camouflage was utilized on airplanes, tanks, and other troop carriers and in concealing materials as it became a standard feature of clothing.

The Finest Materials

Digitized patterns have been used in camouflage in the latest days to aid the Military in effectively blending into various surroundings. Additionally, the textile grade has improved. The most modern camouflage materials incorporate increased durability and weather resistance while building on the principles of yesteryear.

Woven polyester microfiber is used to manufacture more flexible textiles while preventing ripping. This style of cloth is suitable for a wide range of uses, including clothes, shelters, headgear, and helmet covers. Even missile liners and belts for transporting guns can be made with it. The woven polyester microfiber structure provides outstanding mechanical durability, making it harder to rip. It is beneficial for army uses at all periods, but it is particularly crucial for items like belts.

Camouflage Fabrics Application

For aesthetic reasons, only a tiny percentage of camouflage fabrics are applied in other industry sectors, such as the fashion clothing sector. Camouflage fabrics are mainly involved in the arms business sector. The usage of camouflage fabric in army fabrics is covered in the paragraph after this one:

.Since their introduction into the army over 75 years ago, camouflage fabrics have become increasingly prevalent. It was especially true in the decades after the US Troops’ 1990 operating condition of Desert Storm in the Middle East with the NATO Alliances.

.Most uniformed units, such as the Military, naval, air force, and paramilitary troops, currently employ camouflage fabrics since they increase each officer’s degree of protection and the fabric’s composition enhances convenience and ruggedness. The market for camouflage fabrics is anticipated to approach 350 million meters annually worldwide.

1. Clothing

In addition to concealing and protecting each warrior, the outfit also serves to identify friends from enemies. Creating and providing a large group of troops with camouflage clothing is necessary. Designing camouflage uniforms requires combining expense, constructability, uniqueness, and camouflaging impact.

.Various camouflage clothing may be needed for militaries operating in several theaters of warfare. There are many types of camouflage clothing for arid, forest, and moderate regions. By affixing bits of flora to the outfit, designs can be partially adapted to various environments. The knot is widely used to wrap helmets, and some coats have tiny hooks. Therefore, choosing appropriate camouflage leaves or adapting the provided battle equipment to fit the surrounding geography is crucial for combat forces.

2. Shelter Buildings

The army manufactures shelters to offer protection from the bitter winter. The canopy is sewn with a rubbery layer at the bottom layer to prevent moisture buildup. It is white solely on one side and olive green on the other. As a result, in many situations, it acts as the purpose of camouflage. In this case, camouflage fabric is utilized. The main benefit of using camouflage fabrics to construct tarps is that they mix in with the environment and are invisible to potential opponents.

3. Rocket Defense

Protecting troops against missiles like gunshots, metal shavings, and flying objects of all different dimensions, forms, and speeds is vital. Body armor made of textiles could offer some defence against this. Super tensile fiber production has developed at a rapid rate.

.Today, missile security is provided by reactive polyamide fibers like Kevlar and Twaron, which come in a range of detoxes and coatings. With this objective in mind, numerous hyper-viscosity polyethene (UHMWPE) fibers have been created. Spectra and Dyneema fibers are frequently employed. Fabric covered in camouflage is used for this.

4. Army Backpack

An army pack sometimes referred to as a MOLLE (Modular Light Load Carrying Equipment), is designed to enable a person to adjust the gear they need. The items of a MOLLE pack are equivalent to those of a backpack regardless of the trooper’s location, duration, or objective.

5. Canvas Tarp

The benefits of camouflage tarpaulin are numerous. It is straightforward to mount and offers excellent defence against bad climates and prying sights. They have very different features, yet their uses are similar to army traps. The polymers used to make the army camouflage tarp dries quickly, enabling quick storage when not in use.

The camouflage coating is thin and unobtrusive. Any structure, environmental or artificial, is easy to connect to. A tarp must be solid and resilient to cover army equipment effectively.

Camouflage Fabrics Digital Printing Systems

Zimmer Austria is a leader company in camouflage fabrics digital printing systems. In below we introduce latest Zimmer Austria technologies in details:

Zimmer: Ready to Support You, Challenge Us

zimmer camouflage fabrics ZIMMER AUSTRIA Digital Printing Systems is the technology and machinery expert when it comes to digital printing of military camouflage fabrics and webbings..

A large variety of substrates incl. polyamide, polyester, cellulosic, special fibers and various blends such as m-Aramide, p-Aramide, TwaronTM, KermelTM, NomexTM, ConexTM KevlarTM or LenzingTM FR based end-products can be printed with COLARIS and COLARIS-NF digital printers.

ZIMMER AUSTRIA will not only be the machine manufacturer and supplier, but can also assist with the required knowhow for IR-reflectance control for fabrics being used to produce uniforms, FR-products for special forces, bulletproof vests, rain protection, ponchos, nettings tents, carrying systems, sleeping bags, parachutes as well as all kinds of webbings incl. hook & loop quick-fix-and-release products etc.

Patterns & Colors must match the environment of a combat area which may include wood- lands, urban terrains, deserts, snow or marine surroundings and may include conventional, digital and multicam patterns.

Color Fastness: good to excel- lent fastness to light, rubbing and washing must be matched.

IR-reflectance control is the most important feature for camouflage fabrics. It ensures that forces can ́t be detected by night vision devices in dark environment.

At the same time the L*a*b values of specified colors must be in a very close range to remain well camouflaged in daylight. IRR-Control Technology has been developed for digital printing by ZIMMER AUSTRIA and the know- how is available together with COLARIS and COLARIS-NF Digital Camouflage Printing Systems.

Depending on fabric composition, different dyes are used for printing.
– polyamide: metal-complex and acid dye inks – polyester: disperse inks – cotton and regenerated celluose fiber: Jettex® VAT inks – substrates from various fiber blends: pigment inks

In most cases, a 3-stage process is required
1. pre-coating with drying to avoid excessive ink migration 2. printing with drying and HT fixation for IRR carbon black 3. fixation process depending on applied ink type

Depending on final application, the fiber and material compositions are selected.
Criteria can be: – mechanical strength, light-, wash-, crock fastness and price – polyamide, polyester, cotton, regenerated celluose fiber, aramide and other special fibers are used to match different requirements – twill, ripstop, plain weave, different kinds of knits and many more constructions are used in military camouflage fabrics

IRR CONTROL
Patterns and colors selected are relatively easy to match for daylight camouflage.More difficult is hiding of visibility in twilight or at full night darkness.Through a night vision device, colors without IRR control appear as a light grey. By adjusting the reflectance for each individual color as close as possible to the natural colors of leaves, bark, soil, sand, stone, etc., the detection of an object be- comes almost impossible.ZIMMER has developed a technology for a rea- listic simulation of a print when seen through a night vision device. A specifically designed work- flow allows to match the L*a*b and IRR require- ments and to control the inkjet system.
