Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) Shines at EATLW 2024 Conference

At the EATLW 2024 conference, the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) took center stage, affirming its position as the leading textile processing standard for organic fibers. Mr. Muktar Lamido Dodo delivered an inspiring session titled “African Fashion: Make a Difference with GOTS,” emphasizing the transformative role of GOTS in promoting sustainable and ethical practices within Africa’s textile industry.

GOTS is renowned worldwide for its comprehensive coverage of the entire post-harvest processing of textiles made with certified organic fibers, such as organic cotton and organic wool. It sets stringent environmental and social criteria, banning the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), highly hazardous chemicals (such as azo dyes and formaldehyde), and child labor. Additionally, GOTS mandates robust social compliance management systems and strict wastewater treatment practices.

Developed by leading international standard setters—the Organic Trade Association (U.S.), Japan Organic Cotton Association, International Association Natural Textile Industry (Germany), and Soil Association (UK)—GOTS ensures the organic status of textiles from field to finished product. This non-profit organization, self-financed and globally recognized, serves as the benchmark for sustainable textile production.

Mr. Dodo’s presentation underscored the significant impact GOTS standards can have on enhancing the credibility and marketability of African textiles in the global market. By adopting GOTS standards, African manufacturers and designers can produce high-quality textiles that contribute to environmental sustainability and social well-being.

The session celebrated the progress towards a more sustainable and responsible fashion industry, with GOTS leading the way. As the textile industry continues to evolve, GOTS remains at the forefront, championing the use of organic materials and responsible manufacturing processes.
