Turkish textile industry in 2020

The textile industry in Turkey is gaining more importance in 2020. Turkey is one of the largest textiles and clothing producing countries in the world and the 6th most significant supplier in the world and the 3rd largest supplier to the EU. Turkey’s textile industry is of great importance in the European and North American textile trade. The modern industrial facilities in Turkey demonstrate the considerable growth of the textile industry in recent years thanks to the important Turkish yarn brands, fabric manufacturers, and organic cotton companies.

The Turkish textile and ready-to-wear industry currently employs more than one million people. The textile industry and its supporting sub-sectors now employ a total of 1.67 million people, and this number will increase in the coming years due to additional investments and increased exports.

As Turkey’s trade minister said, Turkey exported some $17.7 billion worth of ready-to-wear products in 2019. Turkish manufacturers are now seeking to seize the window of opportunity created by coronavirus-affected China, which is expected to suffer from production delays of five-six months in 2020.

According to the Istanbul Garment Exporters Association (İHKİB), the sector had a 10.1% share of the country’s total exports of $14.8 billion in January 2020, reaching an export figure of $1.5 billion, up 5.8% in the same month last year. Nearly 73.4% of exports went to EU countries, with Germany and Spain as the primary recipients.

The Different Types of Fabric

First, “fabric” is a material made by entwining fibers together. Generally, a fabric is named after the fiber user to manufacture it; some fabrics will even use a blend of different fibers. The fabric is then named depending on the fiber(s) used, its pattern and texture, and the production process implemented. Some fabrics also consider where the fibers originated from.

Based on this, there are actually two sets of categories that first separate the types of fabric: the fibers used (natural vs. synthetic) and the production processes (woven vs. knitted).

Natural vs. Synthetic

The first differing detail with fabrics is dependent on what type of fiber is used. There are two types: natural and synthetic.
Natural fibers are obtained from plants and animals. For example, cotton comes from plants while silk comes from silkworms.
Synthetic fibers, on the other hand, are made entirely of synthetic matter created by man.

Woven vs. Knitted

The second differing detail in the production process used. Again, there are two types: woven and knitted.
Woven fabrics are made up of two pieces of yarn that interweave horizontally and vertically on a loom. Since the yarn runs at a 45-degree angle, the fabric doesn’t stretch and is usually tauter and sturdier than knit fabrics. The fabric consists of a weft (when the yarn goes across the width of the fabric) and a warp (when the yarn goes down the length of the loom).
There are three types of woven fabric: plain weave, satin weave, and twill weave. Examples of popular woven fabrics are chiffon, crepe, denim, linen, satin, and silk.

For knit fabric, think of a hand-knit scar; the yarn is formed into an interconnecting loop design, which allows it to stretch significantly. Knit fabrics are known for being elastic and keeping shape.
There are two types of knit fabric: warp-knitted and weft-knitted. Examples of popular knit fabrics are lace, lycra, and mesh.

The Turkish government optimizes its exhibition support mechanism every year and adds or removes new countries to the list of target markets every year according to the economic conditions of the world and relations with the countries of the world and the current needs of the export markets.

Attractive and large markets such as the American market are always at the top of the support of the Turkish government, and recently, with the growth of several hundred percent of furniture, home textiles and machine-made carpets from Turkey to the United States, the Turkish government has strengthened its support.
