Textile Development in the Middle East and Africa: Insights from ZIMMER AUSTRIA

In this interview, Mr. Josef Osl, the GM Marketing at ZIMMER AUSTRIA, sheds light on the role of European companies and organizations in the development of the textile sectors in the Middle East and Africa. He discusses the support provided by European governments, assesses the potential of these regions in the textile sector, and outlines the solutions and recommendations offered by ZIMMER AUSTRIA to address the unique challenges and opportunities in the region.

How do European companies and organizations contribute to the development of the textile sectors in the Middle East and Africa?

European companies and organizations, like VDMA, aid in developing the Middle East and African textile sectors through initiatives like “Skilled Workers for Africa” establishing training centers in Botswana, Kenya, and Nigeria. NGOs play a pivotal role in ensuring humane working conditions and environmental sustainability across the textile value chain.

What role do European governments play in supporting the development of the textile sectors in the Middle East and Africa?

The European Union and its member countries are enhancing textile production in Africa through various initiatives. Recognizing the continent’s potential, they are investing in training programs such as the “Skilled Workers for Africa” initiative, establishing training centers in countries like Botswana, Kenya, and Nigeria.

Additionally, they are partnering with local organizations and companies to promote sustainable and fair production practices across the textile value chain. European governments are also negotiating bilateral and Union-level agreements to stimulate job creation in the sector, aiming to address challenges like job losses due to competition from East Asia. While aid is part of the equation, there’s a growing emphasis on on-the-ground investments to foster long-term growth.

How do you assess the potential of the Middle East and Africa in the textile sector?

The African textile industry, traditionally overlooked, holds immense potential. Shifting focus towards sustainable practices can drive socio-economic development while meeting global demand for ethical products.

This shift not only benefits local communities but also resonates with conscientious consumers worldwide. Embracing sustainability can enhance brand reputation and access niche markets, transforming Africa into a beacon of responsible manufacturing in the global textile industry.

What solutions and recommendations does Zimmer Austria offer?

ZIMMER Austria provides robust machinery, product development expertise, and consultative solutions tailored to the region’s needs, with a growing presence across North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Middle East. To further enhance our effectiveness, we are currently in the process of establishing a representation and service network across the region.

While historically focused on the Middle East, our success in Egypt, Algeria, and Nigeria’s carpet and blanket industry has expanded to include African fashion printing and military textile needs in Ivory Coast and Ethiopia. Growing partnerships with prominent clients testify to our strength. ZIMMER excels in screen and digital printing, coating systems, and textile wet finishing machinery, making us the ideal partner for these markets.
