In a significant move towards enhancing sustainable agriculture, representatives from Uzbekistan textile industry took part in the Better Cotton Conference 2024, held in Türkiye. This conference, a pivotal event in the global cotton industry calendar, focused on advancing sustainability in cotton production worldwide.
The Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), established in 2005, is the largest program globally dedicated to promoting sustainable cotton farming practices. Operating in 26 countries, including Uzbekistan, the BCI supports over 2.5 million farmers by providing them with the knowledge and tools necessary to improve their farming practices, reduce environmental impact, and increase economic sustainability.
This year’s conference brought together more than 2,500 members from various sectors, including approximately 330 renowned brands and textile manufacturers. Among these are industry giants such as IKEA, H&M, Inditex, GAP, Nike, and Levi Strauss & Co. The event served as a platform for these stakeholders to discuss the latest advancements, challenges, and opportunities in sustainable cotton production.
Uzbekistan’s active participation in the BCI and the Better Cotton Conference marks a significant milestone for the country’s textile industry. Uzbek producers have recently achieved full membership in the digital platform “Better Cotton,” a comprehensive tool that allows members to trace the cotton supply chain globally. This digital integration is expected to enhance transparency, accountability, and sustainability within Uzbekistan’s cotton industry.
The inclusion of Uzbek producers in the Better Cotton platform signifies a robust commitment to sustainable practices and aligns with global efforts to create a more environmentally friendly and economically viable cotton industry. This step is anticipated to bolster Uzbekistan’s position in the global market, attracting more international partnerships and investments.
Uzbekistan’s engagement with the BCI reflects the country’s broader strategy to modernize its agricultural sector, reduce its environmental footprint, and improve the livelihoods of its cotton farmers. As the country continues to align with international standards, it sets a precedent for other cotton-producing nations to follow.
The Better Cotton Conference 2024 concluded with a renewed commitment from all participants to continue working towards a sustainable future for the cotton industry, emphasizing the importance of collaboration, innovation, and transparency. For Uzbekistan, this conference not only provided valuable insights and connections but also reinforced its role as a key player in the global move towards sustainable agriculture.
