It’s definitely been a good new year for the UK-based Sainsbury ’s apparel division as the clothing sales, especially of Tu Clothing brand, have gone up by 4 per cent in the third quarter ending 4 January.
The full-price sales rose by around 8 per cent and womenswear, in particular, was popular, including ‘a sell-out range’ of novelty Christmas jumpers.
It is important to note here that the apparel sales in Q1 of the current financial year actually fell by 4.5 per cent; though it recovered to a 3.3 per cent rise in Q2, Q3 was strong at a 4.4 per cent rise.
Expressing delight over the impressive sales during Q3, Mike Coupe, Chief Executive, J. Sainsbury’s Plc, said “The colder weather helped deliver strong clothing sales in the third quarter and our Christmas, party and gifting ranges were all popular with customers.”
The general merchandise sales, however, saw a slump of 3.9 per cent during the same period.
