AI and the Future of Textiles: Cornelia Buchwalder Shares Insights

During ITMA Asia + CITME 2024, Cornelia Buchwalder, Secretary General of Swissmem, shared her perspective on the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the textile industry and its potential long-term implications.

AI in Textiles: Driving Innovation While Reshaping Workforce Dynamics

Discussing AI’s current influence, Ms. Buchwalder noted its growing integration into daily operations and its potential to drive technological advancements. “To be honest, I don’t have a definitive answer yet,” she remarked. “AI is more than a buzzword—solutions are already making an impact. For instance, in our daily work, AI supports tasks like writing and analysis. When it comes to machinery, I am confident AI will elevate capabilities to the next level, but I do not expect a dramatic transformation in the short or mid-term.”

On workforce implications, Ms. Buchwalder addressed common concerns about job displacement. Drawing parallels to the broader effects of digitalization, she observed: “In Switzerland and other countries, digitalization has not eliminated jobs—it has shifted them. Certain job profiles may eventually become obsolete, but new roles around artificial intelligence will emerge. I don’t foresee AI leading to widespread job cuts; instead, it will reshape workforce skills and job profiles over the long term.”

While the mid-term impact of AI remains uncertain, Ms. Buchwalder expressed optimism about its role in driving innovation within the textile sector. She emphasized the importance of adapting workforce development strategies to meet the evolving needs of the industry.

ITMA Asia + CITME 2024 provided a vital forum for industry leaders to discuss how technologies like AI are shaping the future of textiles. This dialogue reinforces AI’s dual role as a catalyst for innovation and a driver of workforce evolution.
