The UAE textile industry is the country’s largest trading sector after oil, stated officials at Abughazaleh Trading Company (ABCO) on Wednesday.
According to Midhat M. Abu Ghazaleh, CEO of ABCO, UAE’s textiles exports cover more than 50 countries in Africa, the Middle East, South Asia and Europe, while major exporters are China, South Korea, Japan and Asia.
The textile industry is vital to the growth of UAE’s economy due to its contribution to the industrial output, employment generation and foreign exchange earnings, added Ghazaleh. The CEO revealed that home-grown garment brands were gaining popularity in the local market.
“The UAE textile industry has a diversified product portfolio. Some of the textiles produced in the country are car seats, tents and curtains, in addition to clothes. The knitted fabric is most in demand in UAE, accounting for around 49.7 per cent, followed by woven fabrics,” stated the head of ABCO.
ABCO, a UAE-based general trading company, is a wholesale distributor and manufacturer of all types of apparel, footwear, luggage, hand bags and house hold products. The company operates in GCC countries, MENA, South Africa, South East Asia, East Europe and Russia.
The trading company said it’s of the view that textile trade in the UAE will exhibit growth and profitability through the bulk import and re-exporting of textiles and textile articles, particularly from China and India. Both markets constitute a major segment of UAE’s textile imports due to the availability of relatively cheap labour and lower input costs, which lead to an overall decrease in the cost of manufacturing textiles, said the company.
