Turkey has solidified its position as the second-largest producer and exporter of hosiery in the world, according to Ender Doğan, Chairman of the Board of the Hosiery Industrialists Association. Doğan emphasized the sector’s steady growth and technological advancements, noting that demand for sports socks has surged due to increased interest in healthy living, while varicose vein and diabetic socks are also experiencing higher demand due to rising health concerns.
Strong Export Performance Despite Global Challenges
Speaking about the sector’s performance, Doğan highlighted that Turkey’s hosiery industry is supported by over 100,000 fully electronic machines and approximately 2,000 manufacturers of varying sizes. The country closed last year’s exports at $1.2 billion, maintaining the same level as in 2023 despite global economic fluctuations. Given the recent decline in textile and ready-to-wear exports, he regarded this achievement as a positive sign of the industry’s resilience.
Turkey’s hosiery sector exports 70% of its production to European Union (EU) countries, primarily serving major global retail brands. The industry made a significant investment in 2022, increasing its capacity by 20%. Doğan stressed that the sector is well-equipped to meet the needs of organized retail companies, boasting advanced technology, infrastructure, systems, and quality control measures. Fast production and service capabilities have also strengthened Turkey’s competitive edge in the global market.
Changing Trends and Consumer Preferences
Consumer trends have played a crucial role in shaping the hosiery market. Doğan pointed out that colorful and patterned socks gained popularity before the COVID-19 pandemic, driven by fashion trends such as shorter trouser legs. However, interest in such styles has waned in recent years.
The work-from-home culture and a shift toward casual dress in professional environments have notably reduced the demand for thin women’s socks. Meanwhile, the growing focus on health and wellness has led to increased demand for sports socks, as well as specialized hosiery such as varicose vein and diabetic socks.
Sustainability and Energy Challenges in the Sector
Doğan also addressed sustainability efforts within the sector, mentioning that companies are actively working on energy efficiency, raw material optimization, and streamlined production processes. While the industry recognized the importance of sustainability early on, the transition to sustainable energy solutions remains a complex and long-term challenge.
Europe’s energy crisis has prompted companies to reassess and, in some cases, delay sustainability initiatives. Factories in Istanbul, in particular, face difficulties in resolving these challenges independently. Recycling and sustainability are pressing issues that require collaboration between industry associations and governmental bodies. Doğan stressed that the Hosiery Industrialists Association continues to support its members by providing relevant information, organizing seminars, and developing strategic roadmaps for the future of the sector.
