Why Traceability Should Be Your Top Concern—Regardless of Your Job Title

The fashion industry is increasingly focused on traceability due to enacted and proposed ESG-related regulations in the U.S. and EU. Regulations like the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA) and the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive are driving the need for traceability in fashion supply chains. The UFLPA, for instance, detains goods suspected of violating the law, even if they are in compliance, unless brands can prove their traceability. This has led to companies adopting digital solutions to track their supply chains efficiently.

There are at least 12 ESG-related policies either enacted or in discussion, all pressuring the fashion industry to become more data-rich and transparent, from fiber to finished goods. To comply, fashion companies need to trace their products and practices thoroughly, involving multiple teams within their organizations.

The C-Suite has taken notice of the importance of traceability, as it has significant implications for compliance, risk reduction, and cost savings. According to Planet Tracker’s report, traceability can increase net profits by 3 to 7 percent.

In summary, the fashion industry is under increasing pressure from ESG-related regulations to improve traceability in its supply chains, from tracking raw materials to finished products. Compliance requires a holistic approach involving various departments, and the C-Suite is increasingly focused on traceability as it can lead to significant benefits in terms of profitability and risk reduction.
