Nigeria will save at least N 3.6 trillion in five years through the Natural Strategy for Competitiveness in Raw Materials (NSCRM), according to science minister Ogbonnaya Onu, who recently told Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) president Mansur Ahmed that technology will be developed to promote innovation and make state-funded research industry-driven.
Nigerian textile companies are members of MAN.
Research efforts by the ministry of science and technology will now be focussed on national needs, enabling the country to stop import of products that can be manufactured domestically, he said.
The ministry has developed a leather policy as well, he said.
The Bt cotton variety launched by the National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA) would resuscitate Nigeria’s moribund textile industry and rejuvenate the cotton sector, a Nigerian newspaper report quoted the minister as saying.
