Exploring the Future of Textile Machinery: Insights from Alex Zucchi at ITMA Asia + CITME 2024

Today, we had the privilege of interviewing Mr. Alex Zucchi, President of CEMATEX (the Association of European Textile Machinery Manufacturers), during the ITMA Asia + CITME 2024 exhibition in Shanghai. Mr. Zucchi shared valuable insights on critical topics impacting the textile industry.

Sustainability as a Cultural Shift

Mr. Zucchi emphasized that sustainability is not just a trend but a cultural shift that requires education and commitment from all stakeholders. “Sustainability is a culture; it’s about educating people to understand that our actions today will impact future generations. If we don’t make improvements, we risk leaving a troubled world for our children,” he stated. He highlighted the significant investments European manufacturers have made in research and development over the past decade to reduce water consumption and enhance eco-friendly practices.

The Role of AI in Textile Manufacturing

Another major topic of discussion was the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the textile machinery sector. Mr. Zucchi noted that while AI has the potential to revolutionize various aspects of production, its application in textile manufacturing is still in the early stages. “We’ve been exploring how AI can streamline processes, but there hasn’t been a truly effective implementation yet. The focus should be on using AI to enhance service and maintenance rather than just automating design,” he explained.

He also stressed the importance of retaining human expertise in the industry. “AI cannot replace the invaluable knowledge and skills of our people. Our workforce is our greatest asset, and we must ensure they remain at the forefront of our operations,” he added.

Quality and Service as Competitive Advantages

Mr. Zucchi concluded by highlighting that the high level of quality and service distinguishes European manufacturers in the global market. “It’s not just about selling machinery; it’s about maintaining it at optimal levels. However, globalization presents challenges in finding qualified personnel,” he noted.

As the textile machinery industry navigates these evolving challenges, Mr. Zucchi’s insights serve as a reminder of the importance of sustainability, innovation, and human capital in shaping a more resilient future.
