Biancalani History and Achievements

Biancalani Textile Machinery was founded in 1957 by Fiorenzo Biancalani, popular for his ingenuity and close ties with Tuscan textile entrepreneurs in the Officina Meccanica Biancalani in Prato, Italy, with an initial focus on wool finishing machinery in the city’s renowned textile hub. This workshop marked the opening of the Biancalani Factory, serving as the prototype of the company as it exists today.

In 1975, Biancalani made its first appearance at ITMA in Hannover, marking the beginning of its expansion into international markets. During the exhibition, the company introduced the BP2, a high-speed rope washing machine, and the BP4, a combined milling and washing machine for wool fabrics, both of which were met with strong acclaim.
During the 1980s, the company’s expansion was managed by Fiorenzo’s children, Rossano, Rossana, and Massimo, who built strong international commercial networks across England, South Africa, Pakistan, India, and Spain.

In 1987, Biancalani introduced the groundbreaking AIRO® machine at ITMA Paris, a revolutionary innovation that used air to wash, dry, and soften fabrics, with more than 1,200 units installed worldwide. This machine was the first discontinuous rope tumbler system to introduce an air-jet method for moving fabric, an approach never before applied in textile finishing. The impact was immediate and far-reaching, with more than 1,000 units produced and sold worldwide, establishing the AIRO® as a turning point in the industry.

In 1999, at the ITMA exhibition in Paris, Biancalani presented the evolution of the AIRO® 1000 with two new models: the AIRO® QUATTRO and the AIRO® DUE. First exhibited at the 1997 ITMA fair, these enhancements restarted customer enthusiasm, driving demand even higher and further boosting the sales of Biancalani’s finishing machines.

Through the 1990s and 2000s, the company advanced continuous open-width processing with machines such as PETRA, AQUARIA®, AIRO®24, and BRIO®24, broadening capabilities in both wet and dry finishing. In recent years, Biancalani has reinforced its global presence by participating in major trade fairs, unveiling high-end products, and placing a strong emphasis on sustainability.

Textile Drying

Biancalani offers advanced solutions for drying and tumble‑drying fabrics of every size, density, and material. The advanced open-width continuous system, which is Clima Certified, ensures exceptional productivity, flawless results, and significant energy savings.
With multifunctional machines and versatile lines, Biancalani provides flexible options for every need, such as drying, tumble‑drying, mechanical softening, relaxed drying, contact‑free drying, and pre‑drying across countless textile applications.

Wool milling and scouring

Specialized washing and felting systems deliver exceptional output levels with uniform, reliable finishes across every variety of wool fabric, whether woven or knitted, pure or blended, carded or worsted, lightweight or heavy. Beyond cleansing, distinctive effects such as gentle felting can also be achieved through a continuous open-width method, combining high production efficiency with reduced water usage.

Fabric Conditioning and Softening

Mechanical soft-touch finishing can be applied during the drying phase, on dry fabrics, or through steam treatment, significantly reducing, and in some cases eliminating, the need for chemical softeners.

This delivers a more sustainable and long-lasting finish. Fabrics gain enhanced Mass, drape, loft, and softness, resulting in the distinctive AIRO® Hand. The process is particularly useful for corduroy, denim fabrics, terry towels, stretch woven, and velvet while also supporting overall dimensional stabilization.

Textile washing, preparation, and wet finishing

Extensive aqueous processing technologies are offered for both the preparation and refinement of textiles across all sizes, weights, and fiber compositions. Through a state-of-the-art continuous open-width platform and purpose-built machinery tailored to specific tasks, the range of applications is vast: post-print cleansing, post-dye rinsing, organic purification, removal of sizing agents, sustainable bleaching, reduction of polyester mass, preparation of lyocell and cupro, denim treatments, bio-finishing, enzymatic polishing of cellulosic fibers, silk finishing, wool felting, garment fading/aging effects, and many additional specialized finishes.

There are several new trends arising that make good use of advanced technologies which help to create woollen fabrics with amazing designs. Like coats and oversize cardigans with different weights.
While diverse weight of woollen fabrics can cause difficulties during the textile finishing process, there are two machines made by Biancalani which offer new solutions.
One is called IDRA which is a combined modular washing and milling machine. This textile finishing machine with independent channels is designed to independently wash and mill woollen fabrics of different compositions
