Sportswear manufacturing is one of the focuses of an International Trade Centre-led project in Egypt, which will create jobs and increase exports.
The clothing sector is Egypt’s second largest after agriculture. It comprises around 4,000 companies, of which 500-600 export overseas, according to ITC.
However, sportswear was found to be underrepresented and 28 companies will now be supported by the project, which is funded by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) of the Swiss Confederation and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).
Cherine Khallaf, from the Egyptian Ministry of Trade & Industry, said: “Egypt can improve its export potential to the US market while also expanding our presence in Europe and other Arab and African countries.”
