In a major sustainability breakthrough for the textile industry, Woolmark and COLOURizd™ have partnered to unveil QuantumCOLOUR™, a cutting-edge dry colouring solution for wool and wool blends that drastically reduces water and chemical use in the dyeing process.
Officially launching at Pitti Immagine Filati in Florence (Booth I/20, July 1–3), QuantumCOLOUR™ uses just 0.5 liters of water per kilogram of yarn—compared to the 60–120 liters typically needed in traditional wool dyeing methods. The process eliminates pre-treatment, bleaching, and wastewater discharge, marking a bold shift toward sustainable, cost-efficient, and scalable wool coloration.
“After extensive testing on Merino wool and wool blends, we realized the team at COLOURizd™ is on to something truly revolutionary,” said Julie Davies, General Manager of Processing Innovation at Woolmark. “QuantumCOLOUR™ allows for a range of faded to saturated tones, all with minimal environmental footprint.”
Unlike traditional dyeing, which relies on chemicals such as caustic soda, bleach, and salts, QuantumCOLOUR™ utilizes a bluesign®-certified pigment and binder system, injecting colour directly into the yarn bundle. The result: vivid, durable colour and supple texture, without the environmental burden.
The technology has been successfully validated on:
- 100% Merino wool
- Wool blends with cotton, TENCEL™, and nylon
- Yarn counts ranging from 30/2NM to 80/1NM
Testing conducted by Woolmark-authorised labs confirmed the process meets industry benchmarks for colourfastness, consistency, and long-term wear.
“Woolmark represents the gold standard in wool,” noted Jennifer Thompson, CEO of COLOURizd™. “Their global influence will help us scale our low-impact, high-performance solution for wool. With clients like Wrangler, Lee, Cone Denim, and GANT, we’re excited to now serve the premium wool segment.”
With the push for water-efficient, chemical-free production gaining momentum across the global textile industry, QuantumCOLOUR™ arrives at a crucial moment. As wool manufacturers face rising sustainability demands, this innovation offers a practical pathway to eco-conscious yet premium colouration.
Woolmark and COLOURizd™ will debut the technology during Pitti Immagine Filati 2025, inviting global yarn producers, designers, and brands to explore the future of wool dyeing.
