Fashion Industry Tackles Climate Change and Reducing Scope 3 GHG Emissions

As the fashion industry confronts its environmental impact, there’s growing recognition that reducing Scope 3 greenhouse (GHG) emissions—indirect greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain—holds the key to meaningful change.

With the push for Net Zero targets and the introduction of mandatory climate reporting in Australia and New Zealand from 2025 onwards, brands and retailers are facing increasing pressure to make commitments and show tangible results on scope 3 emissions. For apparel and textiles retailers, scope 3 emissions typically account for around 95% of their total carbon footprint.

When it comes to reducing carbon emissions, implementing a holistic approach, from raw material sourcing and manufacturing to transportation and consumer use is critical. Recognising this is a critical issue for the fashion industry, the Global Sourcing Expo Melbourne will feature seminar sessions that explore the issue and unpack relevant solutions.

Scope 3 Emissions in Fashion Unpacked

Fashion brands need to recognise that their entire supply chain contributes significantly to their carbon footprint.

Scope 3 emissions are the indirect greenhouse gas emissions that occur across the fashion value chain and without direct control by an organisation. This includes raw material extraction, energy-intensive production processes and emissions from transportation and logistics. Fast fashion intensifies these impacts, with over 100 billion clothing items produced annually, each significantly contributing to GHG emissions.

By measuring scope 3 emissions, companies can comply with evolving regulatory requirements and gain insights into emission hotspots across their supply chain. This allows them to prioritise emissions reduction strategies, such as identifying which suppliers and factories to partner with on energy efficiency initiatives and the transition to renewable energy.

CEO Leads the Conversation at Global Sourcing Expo

Liam Salter, Founder and CEO of RESET Carbon will present the keynote session “Net Zero and Scope 3 GHG Emissions – How to Get Started and Deliver Results” at the upcoming Global Sourcing Expo Melbourne.
