In a landmark move to bolster its textile and apparel sector, the Egyptian government has announced the allocation of 5.5 million square metres in the Upper Egyptian governorate of Minya for the development of a large-scale industrial zone dedicated to clothing and textile manufacturing.
According to the Apparel Export Council of Egypt, the new zone will house over 600 factories and is projected to generate between 800,000 to 1 million direct and indirect jobs in the coming years. The initiative places a strong emphasis on empowering women in Minya and surrounding governorates by integrating them into the industrial workforce and driving inclusive economic growth.
The project is part of Egypt’s national strategy to expand its textile and apparel exports, with a target of reaching USD 12 billion in annual exports by 2030. The sector saw a significant 18% increase in 2024, with total exports climbing to USD 2.8 billion. Key markets include the United States and Europe, where exports surged by 34% and 17% respectively last year.
The planned industrial city is expected to play a central role in Egypt’s long-term economic vision by strengthening manufacturing in Upper Egypt, enhancing job creation, and reinforcing the country’s position as a competitive global supplier in the textile and apparel industry.
