Loepfe Introduces OffColor Detection for Mélange Yarn Quality Control

Ensuring Consistent Color Quality in Mélange and Colored Yarns

Mélange yarns and color-effect yarns are gaining increasing popularity in the garment industry. However, achieving consistent color quality remains a major challenge for spinning mills. To produce high-quality mélange yarns, fibers must be mixed precisely in correct proportions from the very beginning of the spinning process. Even minor color deviations or shade variations can lead to visible defects in knitted or woven fabrics.

During winding, the risk of mixing bobbins with similar but slightly different shades is high. Such variations can result in disturbing stripes in the final fabric, sometimes rendering the material unsuitable for use. Often, these shade differences are so subtle that they escape the human eye when inspecting bobbins, yet cause serious quality complaints later — a costly issue for spinning mills.

To address this challenge, Loepfe has introduced a new OffColor detection feature for its YarnMaster ZENIT+ yarn clearer. This optional upgrade identifies and eliminates even the smallest color or shade variations in yarns during the winding process. The feature utilizes the existing F-Sensor integrated within YarnMaster ZENIT+, allowing current users to easily update their systems without new hardware.

Proven Performance in Extensive Testing

The new OffColor feature underwent comprehensive testing with numerous mélange yarn bobbins supplied by a customer. Though all bobbins appeared to share the same base color, subtle shade variations were present — particularly in the black portion, ranging from dark to light grey.

During trials at Loepfe’s headquarters in Wetzikon, Switzerland, the YarnMaster ZENIT+ equipped with OffColor successfully detected even the most minute shade differences. To confirm the precision of this function, all other yarn clearer features were disabled during testing.

The results proved the reliability and accuracy of the OffColor detection system, which works independently of yarn color. Additionally, several customers tested the new feature in real production environments and reported highly consistent results — confirming that the system effectively clears yarns with incorrect colors or shades during the winding stage.

A Game-Changer for Mélange Yarn Manufacturers

According to Gianni Heusser, Product Manager at Loepfe, “The new YarnMaster ZENIT+ with the OffColor feature is an absolute must for spinning mills aiming for consistently high quality in mélange or colored yarn production.”

Between 10% and 15% of spinning mills worldwide currently produce colored or mélange yarns, making this innovation especially valuable for that segment. By detecting and eliminating off-color yarns in real time, the YarnMaster ZENIT+ with OffColor ensures a higher level of quality assurance, reduces waste, and protects the mill’s reputation.

This new feature makes Loepfe’s YarnMaster ZENIT+ even more versatile — providing spinning mills with a robust tool for maintaining uniformity, enhancing productivity, and guaranteeing that only perfectly matched yarns reach the next stage of production.
