Synthetic spider silk application includes filters for neutralizing COVID-19

Seevix’s SVX fibers can also be used to coat textile surfaces

Jerusalem – A synthetic spider silk manufacturer is applying its technology to create disposable filters that trap and inactivate COVID-19 and other coronaviruses.

Seevix Material Sciences Ltd., which develops and manufactures SVX synthetic spider silk, noted that the filters are based upon a specific peptide sequence that binds SARS-CoV-2 particles and that can be incorporated into SVX fibers to produce thousands of virus-specific binding sites to immobilize viral particles and prevent the spread.

“SVX can be woven into a protective physical filter that neutralizes coronaviruses,” said Dr. Shlomzion Shen, CEO. “Seevix is currently developing several market-ready anti-COVID-19 applications and will soon be entering into discussions with potential strategic partners,” he said.

SVX’s sponge-like structure, which combines strength, flexibility and low unit weight, enables the loading of disinfectants and cross-linking agents.

Along with its use in filter textiles, SVX fibers also can be used to coat textile surfaces or be used to form part of protective insert to trap and neutralize viruses and microbes.
