US $ 190! That’s new minimum wage for textile workers of Cambodia

Earlier today Cambodia increased its minimum wage for its textile and footwear workers to US $ 190 per month.

That’s a 4.4 per cent increase!

The fear of losing European trade status has finally forced Cambodia to increase the minimum wages, which will come into effect from January 2020.

Speaking on the same, Pav Sina, President, Collective Union Movement of Workers, said that Unions have accepted the new wage though it falls short of their demand of US $ 195.

Sina added that the union also understands that if the wages go higher than countries in the region, everyone including the workers will suffer.

In February this year, the European Union (EU) had initiated a process that could suspend Cambodia’s special trade preferences.

Ken Loo, Secretary General, Garment Manufacturers Association of Cambodia (GMAC), reportedly, said “Employers have accepted the new minimum wage, but they are also concerned about the rising wages.”
