South Korea and Ethiopia Launch Ethiopian-Korean Textile Techno Park in Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – In a landmark collaboration, Ethiopia and South Korea have inaugurated a cutting-edge textile research center in Addis Ababa, marking a pivotal moment for the region’s textile industry. Named the Ethiopian-Korean Textile Techno Park, this state-of-the-art facility, located within the Bole Lemi Industry Zone, is poised to revolutionize textile manufacturing with its advanced training and laboratory services.

The unveiling ceremony, as reported by Ethiopian state-controlled media, underscored the significance of this partnership in driving industrial growth and innovation. Ethiopian state minister for industry, Hasen Mohammed, highlighted the strategic importance of Ethiopia’s location and the burgeoning demand for textiles, positioning the country as a prime destination for export-oriented manufacturing.

The genesis of this collaboration dates back to a memorandum of understanding signed in May 2016, setting the stage for the establishment of the Ethiopian-Korean Textile Techno Park. Situated within the Bole Lemi Park, a thriving industrial hub hosting textile factories, this research center symbolizes the synergy between Ethiopia’s abundant human resources and South Korea’s expertise in technology, manufacturing, energy, and infrastructure.

Ethiopia’s industrial parks have been pivotal in driving economic growth, with total revenue exceeding $1 billion across its 12 parks, according to the country’s Industrial Park Development Corporation. The Ethiopian-Korean Textile Techno Park represents a significant milestone in the country’s journey towards industrialization, leveraging international collaboration to foster research and development in the textile sector.

South Korea’s commitment to advancing textile research extends beyond Ethiopia, with a parallel initiative underway in Uzbekistan. Supported by South Korea’s development aid, the research center at the Tashkent Institute of Textile and Light Industry underscores the importance of global partnerships in driving innovation and growth in the textile industry.

The Ethiopian-Korean Textile Techno Park heralds a new era of collaboration and innovation, reaffirming the role of international cooperation in shaping the future of the textile industry. As Ethiopia continues to position itself as a hub for manufacturing excellence, this state-of-the-art facility promises to propel the sector to new heights of success and sustainability.
