MGMA Sets Strategic Goals to Expand Myanmar’s Garment Industry in Global Markets

The Myanmar Garment Manufacturers Association (MGMA) has unveiled an ambitious 10-year strategic plan (2025-2034) aimed at penetrating global markets with high-quality, value-added garments. The strategy seeks to transform Myanmar’s garment sector into a profitable, ethical, and responsible industry while addressing key challenges and enhancing competitiveness.

Vision for Growth and Expansion

According to the plan, the MGMA expects the industry to be worth approximately $5 billion by 2025, with projections indicating potential growth to $15 billion within the next decade. Employment in the sector is also expected to rise, with the workforce growing from 1.2 million to 1.6 million workers by 2034.

The strategic plan focuses on fostering a collaborative and innovative industrial environment by improving workforce skills, upgrading technology, strengthening infrastructure, and ensuring sustainable economic growth.

Key Strategic Initiatives

The MGMA’s 10-year roadmap prioritizes several key areas to drive Myanmar’s garment industry forward:

  • Workforce Development: Enhancing training programs to equip workers with modern garment production skills.
  • Technology Upgrades: Investing in automation and digital transformation to improve efficiency and quality.
  • Infrastructure Strengthening: Expanding and modernizing manufacturing facilities to boost production capacity.
  • Stakeholder Networking: Strengthening partnerships with global buyers, investors, and supply chain stakeholders.
  • Financial Resources: Securing funding and investment to support sustainable industry growth.

Challenges and Market Performance

Despite its potential, Myanmar’s garment sector faces challenges such as global competition, infrastructure limitations, and access to financing. In 2024, the country’s garment sector earned $4.46 billion in export revenue, reflecting a $750 million decline from 2023.

MGMA’s strategic roadmap aims to overcome these obstacles and position Myanmar as a competitive player in the international garment industry by focusing on sustainable practices, innovation, and ethical manufacturing.

Looking Ahead

With a clear strategy in place, Myanmar’s garment sector is set to become a key player in the global market. The MGMA’s commitment to quality, sustainability, and innovation is expected to drive long-term growth, ensuring the industry remains competitive and profitable for years to come.
