Incarcerated Individuals Contribute to Hospital Textile Needs and Craftsmanship

Inmates in the Central Anatolian province of Yozgat have found purpose and skill development through a prison-based workshop. This initiative caters to the textile requirements of hospitals in Yozgat and its neighboring regions, all while aiding inmates’ reintegration into society upon their release.

The workshop, established by the prison administration, employs 32 individuals who diligently produce a wide array of items. These range from surgical gowns to stretcher covers, disposable patient clothing, and material covers. Their products not only serve local hospitals but are also dispatched to university hospitals in Kayseri, Kırşehir, and Kırıkkale.

Inmates are not only compensated for their daily work but also receive a share of the profits generated by the products they craft. Additionally, the facility houses a separate hobby workshop where prisoners craft various wooden items, including ships, chests, and clocks.

One inmate, S.S., expressed the benefits of this opportunity, stating, ‘Being offered such employment within the penal institution has been beneficial to us both psychologically and financially. After serving my sentence, I intend to continue the same profession outside. I had no prior knowledge of the trade before coming here. I would like to extend my gratitude to everyone who has enabled us to become skilled professionals.’

A.O., another inmate engaged in crafting wooden products, shared, ‘Here, we obtain souvenirs by manufacturing wooden items from recycling, such as boxes, ships, and clocks. These activities provide us with significant contributions on social, cultural, and economic fronts.’
